Jay's POV
I had dropped Kaylee to school before heading to the district. I walked into Hank's office.
Hank: you okay kiddo?
Jay: I dunno
Hank: what's up? You ill?
Jay: I feel weird
Hank: seizure weird?
Jay: I don't think so. I feel really anxious
Hank: anything happen?
Jay: no it's just one of them days
Hank: trouble okay going to school?
Jay: it was a bit of a fight but we got there in the end. She had to try and argue with me on everything. She started because I told her to take her washing and put it in the basket. It gets exhausting.
Hank: that's Kaylee for ya
Jay: yes
Hank: she's really her fathers daughter
Jay: I weren't that bad
Hank: tell that to the door you ripped off the hinges because I told you to tidy your room or you weren't allowed out
Jay: I guess
Hank: we haven't caught a case so just catch up with any paperwork.
I went out to my desk and sat down
Adam: how's Kaylee been?
Jay: trouble
Kev: do you expect anything less?
Adam: troubles her middle name
My phone started ringing and it was Connor.
Jay: Connor what's up is everything okay?
Connor: Jays it's erm it's Freddie? He's in med. it's bad Jay
Jay: what happened?
Connor: he's in severe DKA.
Jay: im on my way
Connor: please don't tell Kaylee. Not yet anyways
Jay: okay. I'll be 20
Call ended
I ran into hanks office
Hank: what's up?
Jay: pops I gotta go. Freddie's in med and it's bad
Hank: go

I ran out of the district and to my car. I made my way to med
Maggie: Jay?
Jay: Freddie Rhodes what room is he in?
Maggie: he's in the ICU
Jay: ICU?
Maggie: yeah he's critical right now
Jay: shit
Maggie: Will, Connor and Justin are up there already
Jay: thanks Maggie
I went up to the ICU and Connor was pacing and Justin was tryna calm him down
Jay: Connor
Connor: he's in a coma. His sugars were so high that his body's struggling
Jay: how did this happen? He's been on top of it. He's been doing well
Connor: I don't know. He was at a party so he was probably drinking and smoking which messes with his sugars. He somehow broke his pump so im guessing he was doing some stupid shit. His sensor expired and he must've been putting off changing it and forgot.
Jay: so his levels were high all night?
Connor: They must've been. When I walked in early morning after my shift. I just found him on the floor. His skin was flushed, he was covered in vomit and the smell on his breath. I knew what it was straight away.
Will: we need to tell Kaylee.
Connor: I don't want her to see him like this
Jay: I'll tell her but I don't want her coming to the hospital. Not right now anyway
Will: not seeing him is gonna make it worse
Jay: she doesn't need to see him like this
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, staring at the phone in my hand. The worry for Freddie hit me deep but it was Kaylee that I was going to have to deal with. I knew she'd be upset and that was the last thing I needed today.

Kaylee pov
I couldn't sit still. Not today. Not with everything buzzing in my head like a swarm of angry bees. The classroom feels too small and the noise is starting to close in on me. Zach's been egging me on all morning and I don't think either of us is going to make it through the lesson without causing some kind of chaos. Archie was gonna be late cause he was in a meeting

Mr Mead: Kaylee, do you want to share with the class?
I glanced at Zach who gave me one of those grins that said 'We're totally doing this.' I leant back in my chair kicking my feet up onto the desk in front of me
Kaylee: Nah. Just thinking about more important things
Zach bursts out laughing mr meads eye twitch. Mr Mead: Kaylee—
Before he could say anything else, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I didn't think, just pulled it out. The screen lit up and I see the message from Dad

Dad
Kaylee, don't freak out. Freddie's in DKA. It's serious. Stay away for now okay?

Kaylee
What? You can't keep me away.

Dad
Just do as you're told. I'm just tryna protect you

Kaylee
No you're just tryna control me. You're always making these bullshit decisions. I'm not a little kid. Freddie's family. He was there for me. I need to be there for him

Dad
I hear kiddo but me and Connor don't want you to see him like this. It's not nice to see

Kaylee
I don't care

Dad
You're not coming to the hospital end of story

Kaylee
youre such a fucking dick

My heart hammered in my chest. DKA. Diabetic ketoacidosis. I knew what that meant. I knew how dangerous it is. Freddie's like a big brother to me, and now he's in that kind of state? I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms. Archie knelt down next to me
Kaylee: im fine leave me alone
Mr Mead: Kaylee what's going on?
Kaylee: Nothing
Mr Mead: then phone away
Kaylee: look around everyone's got there phone out
Mr Mead: You're causing a scene, and if you keep this up—
Kaylee: I'm not causing anything! You're the one that's—
Mr Mead: im asking you to calm down
Kaylee: you're always on my case
Archie: Kaylee come on let's go and calm down
Kaylee: I'm not calming down! You all think I'm some kind of freak just because I don't fit into your stupid little box!
Mr mead: Kaylee, please—
I shoved my chair back, knocking it over in the process. I couldn't stay here. I couldn't breathe here. Archie was stood infront of me
Archie: let go and step outside
I shoved past him
Kaylee: I don't want to talk to you! I don't want to talk to anyone!

I stormed out of the classroom, the door slamming behind me. My hands were shaking and my chest feels tight as I made my way down the hallway. My phone buzzed again but I didn't even look at it this time. I didn't care. All I cared about is Freddie. Was he okay? Was he even going to make it? No I couldn't think about that. Not now. I needed to keep moving or I'd lose it completely. I reached the lockers and slammed my fist against the metal. Once. Twice. Three times. The noise rang in my ears but it didn't stop the hurt inside. It didn't stop the rage. The frustration. The fear.
Carl: Kaylee! What the hell are you doing?
I turned to see him standing there with that stupid smirk on his face.
Kaylee: Carl
Carl: I'm just messing
Kaylee: im not in the mood for your bullshit
Carl: you gonna go running to daddy

I swung at him hitting him in the jaw. Carl stumbles back, blinking in surprise
Carl: what the fuck Kaylee?
Kaylee: I said shut up
Mr James: Enough both of you! Kaylee, what's going on? Talk to me
Kaylee: I don't want to talk to you! don't want to talk to anyone. Especially not Dad or Connor.
Mr James: Kaylee, whatever this is, we can figure it out. You need to calm down first. Do you want me to call someone? Maybe someone you trust?
Archie: Kaylee who do you want us to call? Kelly? Justin? Will?
Kaylee: Kelly
Mr James nodded before pulling out his phone

Kelly pov
I was at the squad table when my phone started ringing
Kelly: hello?
??: mr severide it's mr James from Lincoln grove high school. I'm calling in regards to Kaylee halstead
Kelly: is she alright?
Mr James: we've had a bit of an incident. I don't know what led up to it but she worked herself up into quite a state. She's been punching lockers and hit another student. She doesn't wanna talk to anyone but you
Kelly: im on my way

I went to chiefs office
Boden: what's up kelly?
Kelly: somethings up with Kaylee
Boden: go
Kelly: thanks chief
I made my way to the school and when I walked in I could hear her shouting
Kaylee: fuck off carl before I smash your fucking face in
Carl: ah that's not a way to talk to your brother
??: Carl walk away
I walked over and Kaylee looked like she was about to explode
Kaylee: Carl fuck off
Mr James: Carl get to lesson
Archie: Kaylee you wanna come with me?
Kaylee: no I just want everyone to leave me alone.
I looked at them and nodded and they backed away
Kelly: what's going on kiddo?
She just hugged me and I could feel her tears
Kelly: what's happened?
Kaylee: no one told you?
Kelly: told me what?
Kaylee: Freddie's in med and it's bad. He's in DKA and dad and Connor don't want me there
