We were in Lincoln Park. It was Friday night after school. I wasn't exactly sure how the night had spiraled into chaos but considering i was currently sitting in the back of a patrol car with Carl Gallagher beside me I figured I'd made some questionable life choices.
Kaylee: I knew hanging out with you was a bad idea
Carl: Oh come on that was fun
Kaylee: We just got arrested!
Carl: Nah, we got detained. Big difference. You should know this.
Kaylee: what cause my dad's a cop?
Carl: yeah
I groaned, letting my head fall back against the seat
Kaylee: I am so dead
Carl: Welcome to the Gallagher lifestyle, sis
I shot him a glare but before i could say anything else the car pulled into the parking lot of the 21st District. Dad's precinct.
Kaylee: does it have to be here? Can't we go to the one downtown?
Officer: sorry this is my station
Kaylee: fuck
Carl: what's up?
Kaylee: this is where my dad works
Carl: fuck
The second we were led inside i spotted dad straight away. Him, Adam and hailey were at the front desk talking to Trudy.
Officer: halstead
Dad turned around and I saw his body stiffen. His eyes darted between me and Carl then to the officer escorting us. I'd seen dad pissed before but this was a new level of pissed.
Kaylee: dad before you freak out this guy is overreacting.
Dad: you're supposed to be at Justin's
The officer, clearly amused, handed dad the report
Officer: These two got caught trespassing at the old train yard. No real harm done just a couple of dumb kids messing around
Carl: who you calling dumb jackass?
Dad's jaw clenched as he read over the report. Dad: Trespassing?
Carl: In our defense, it was an abandoned lot
Dad's eyes snapped to Carl and for the first time since this nightmare started Carl looked a little nervous. Hailey folded her arms, shooting me a look
Hailey: You serious right now?
Kaylee: It's not as bad as it sounds
Dad: Oh, really? Because from where I'm standing it sounds pretty damn bad
Officer: Halstead you got it from here?
Dad: yeah these delinquents are with me. Thanks O'Brien
Kaylee: officer O'Brien. I'll remember that. We're not friends.
He left
Carl: Look we weren't really breaking the law. We were just—
Dad shot him a glare so sharp Carl actually shut up. I, however, was not so lucky.
Dad: You have epilepsy Kaylee!
Carl: you have epilepsy?
Hailey: not the time Carl
Dad: Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? What if you had a seizure out there? What if you got hurt? Jesus Christ do you even think before you do this crap?
Kaylee: I was fine
Carl: nothing happened
Dad: That is not the point! The point is you put yourself in danger and you let this idiot drag you into it!
Carl held up his hands
Carl: Hey to be fair she didn't need much convincing
Hailey: Carl
Dad sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Dad: You're both lucky I know the arresting officer or this could've been a lot worse
I could tell day was trying to calm himself
Dad: Let's go. We'll talk about this at home
Carl: Does this mean I'm free to go too?
Dad: No. You're coming with us.
Carl: Wait, what?
Dad: You think I'm letting you walk home? You dragged my daughter into this mess. You're coming with us and then I'm calling Fiona
Carl: Okay, let's not do anything drastic
Dad just shook his head and motioned for us to follow.
Adam: I'll plan your funeral
Kaylee: fuck off dumbass
I turned to Carl
Kaylee: This is your fault
Carl: Worth it
We went to the car and dad started driving. The journey home was painful silent. Dad had been gripping the steering wheel so tightly i was surprised it didn't snap in half. Hailey had shot me one look before staring out the window, probably so she wouldn't start yelling in the car.
Carl had wisely kept his mouth shut.
Now we were back at the apartment and dad had barely waited for the door to shut before turning to face us.
Dad: What the hell were you thinking?!
Kaylee: can this wait till the morning? I'm tired
Hailey: Kaylee
Carl plopped down onto the couch and I followed
Carl: Look, no one got hurt—
Dad: That is not the point Carl! You trespassed onto an abandoned train yard, you could've been seriously hurt, and you—
He turned to me and I could tell he was mad but he was also worried.
Dad: —have a medical condition that makes reckless shit like this twice as dangerous! What if you had a seizure out there? What if you hit your head on the tracks? Did either of you even think about that? I bet Carl doesn't know what to do when you have a seizure
Kaylee: I was fine, Dad
Dad: That's not an excuse!
Carl: Technically we weren't trespassing on the tracks—
Dad: You shut up before I personally drop you off at the precinct for real
Carl immediately shut up. I knew I was in the wrong but I felt like I had to defend myself
Kaylee: it's not like I planned on getting caught
Hailey: Oh my God you're really gonna say that right now?
Dad: I cannot believe this. After everything we've been through lately with your seizures getting worse, the ADHD, the ODD, you still go and do something this reckless?
I hadn't meant for things to go this far. Carl had suggested checking out the old train yard because it was "fun," and yeah, I'd known it was technically illegal but it wasn't like we were committing real crimes. We weren't stealing or anything.
Dad: You're grounded. Two weeks—no phone, no going out, no hanging out with Zach unless it's at school
Kaylee: Two weeks?! That's so unfair!
Dad: Oh, you think it should be longer?
Carl: Damn, Halstead. Tough love
Dad turned to him
Dad: And you—Fiona's on her way
Carl: Wait, hold up—can we not do that?
Dad: You dragged my kid into this mess. You're dealing with your sister
Carl: She's gonna kill me
Dad: Not my problem
Carl muttered something under his breath but even he knew he'd lost this round. Hailey finally stepped forward, arms crossed as she stared at me.
Hailey: I just don't get it. After everything we've been trying to work on with you like learning how to manage your impulses, figuring out the ADHD, talking to Dr. Charles, you still do this?
Kaylee: I just wanted to have fun
Dad: Breaking the law is not how you do that!
Carl: I mean, technically—
Dad shot him another look and Carl immediately shut up again.
Kaylee: pussy
There was a knock at the door and Carl visibly tensed.
Dad: Looks like Fiona's here
Carl: You suck, Halstead.
Dad opened the door and Fiona walked in looking pissed. She walked straight to Carl.
Fiona: What the hell did you do this time?!
Carl: I'm being unfairly persecuted—
Fiona smacked him upside the head
Fiona: Oh, shut up and get up
Carl sighed but stood
Fiona: Fine, but for the record—
Fiona glared
Carl: I'll stop talking now
Fiona grabbed him by the hoodie and dragged him toward the door
Fiona: Thanks for calling me Jay
Dad: Anytime
Carl shot me one last grin before getting yanked out the door
Carl: Worth it
The second the door shut dad turned back to me. Dad: Go to your room
Kaylee: you go to your room
Hailey: not the time kiddo
Kaylee: dads being a dick
Dad: go to your room or I'll get Hank to come over and deal with you. You're choice
I didn't move so dad got his phone out
Jay pov
Kaylee was seriously testing me. I got my phone out and dialled hanks number
Hank: what's up Jay?
Jay: pops can you come and sort Kaylee out?
Kaylee: im literally going upstairs. You're just being a fucking jackass about it
Hank: Jay put me on speaker
I put him on speaker
Jay: pops you're on speaker
Hank: Kaylee I suggest you watch your mouth young lady. You don't wanna get on my bad side
Kaylee: whatever
She walked off muttering as she went upstairs
Jay: thanks pops
Hank: what happened? Heard she was brought to the district
Jay: Carl Gallagher
Hailey: you can't blame him. He didn't make her go
Jay: they were trespassing onto an abandoned train yard
Hank: she's at that age Jay. She's gonna do stupid things. Think of all the stupid things you did
Jay: I know. It's just she doesn't understand that her actions have consequences
Hank: that's just the way her brain works but we've all got to find way to teach her to ignore the impulses. Look I gotta go I'll call her tomorrow
Jay: okay thanks pop
Call ended
Hailey wrapped her arms around me.
Hailey: She's a teenager babe. A rebellious one. We knew this would happen eventually.
Jay: Yeah but did it have to happen tonight?
Hailey: C'mon, let's have a drink. You need it
I sighed but followed her into the kitchen.
