The red light above the OT door kept flickering, casting a cold glow over the empty corridor. Taehyung sat on the floor, back against the wall, his elbows resting on his knees, fingers tangled tightly in his hair. His chest rose and fell in rapid, uneven breaths. Every passing minute scraped at his sanity. Every muffled sound from behind that door made his stomach twist. "Please... please let her be okay... please," he whispered into his palms, voice trembling until it cracked. He kept trying to ask the passing nurses, but they only repeated the same words he had already heard a dozen times, "Sir, it's a twin pregnancy and she arrived in critical condition. We can't say anything yet. The doctors are trying their best." Those words didn't help. They were needles digging deeper into his chest. In the weight of that silence he finally pulled out his phone with shaking hands and dialed Mrs. Lee first.

The moment she answered, panic already in her breath, he broke, "Mom... please... come fast... something happened to Y/N." His voice cracked so badly he had to press a hand against his mouth just to breathe. Mrs. Lee's terrified gasp echoed through the speaker, followed by her frantic voice calling her husband. Then he called his own mother. "Mom... Y/N... she's in surgery... twins... the doctor said it's critical... just come... please come fast." Mrs. Kim didn't ask a single question, didn't waste a second. "We're coming, baby. Hold on. Hold on for her," she said, her voice shaking.

It took them one hour and fifteen minutes on a private jet to reach Jeju, but for Taehyung, it felt like a lifetime. His body couldn't stay still, yet he couldn't stand up. His breathing felt shallow. His entire body trembled as though the hospital's cold walls were closing in on him. When the elevator opened, both families rushed out, terrified, scanning every corner until they saw him—Taehyung sitting on the floor, head resting back against the wall, eyes empty, tears silently sliding down his cheeks.

Mrs. Kim hurried toward him first. "Taehyung-ah..." she whispered, kneeling beside him and placing her hand on his shoulder. He lifted his head slowly, and the moment she saw his swollen eyes and damp cheeks, her own heart broke. "Mom..." he breathed out, voice raw, "Mom... Y/N... Y/N is inside..." The words came out like a child asking for help, like he was losing the only piece of his world. Mrs. Kim lunged forward, wrapping him tightly in her arms. Taehyung's face collapsed into her shoulder as a fresh sob broke out of him, muffled and desperate. Mr. Kim placed a strong but gentle hand on Taehyung's back, rubbing slowly, trying to steady the shaking that wouldn't stop.

On the other side, Mrs. Lee grabbed his arm, trying to keep herself steady even though her own legs felt weak. "Taehyung... my child... where is she? How is she? Tell me, where is my daughter?" Her voice trembled so badly she could barely speak. Taehyung tried to respond but before words could form, the air broke with a sound so small yet so powerful it made everyone freeze.

A cry.
A newborn's cry.

Then another. Two tiny, fragile wails slipped through the thin OT door like miracles fighting their way into the world.

Taehyung's head snapped up instantly. His breath hitched. His body shook. For a second he couldn't even move. Then he stood abruptly, almost stumbling, eyes fixed on the door. "My... my babies..." he whispered, disbelief and hope crashing through him so fast his voice nearly gave out. Everyone's eyes softened, relief flickering for a moment. Mrs. Kim pressed her hand over her mouth as tears fell. Mrs. Lee grabbed her husband's arm tightly, whispering, "That's them... that's our grandchildren..."

But happiness lasted only seconds.

The OT door opened and the doctor stepped out, removing his gloves, his expression serious. Taehyung rushed to him immediately. "Doctor—my wife? My babies? Tell me—please tell me something." His voice trembled so violently the doctor had to grip his shoulder to steady him.

"The babies... both are alive," the doctor said gently. "But they are extremely premature. Their lungs are underdeveloped, and they're showing signs of respiratory distress. We must keep them in the NICU for at least a month, maybe longer. They need oxygen support, incubators, medications... it's going to be a delicate period."

Taehyung nodded rapidly, tears falling again. "Okay... whatever they need. Just save them."

The doctor hesitated before the next part, his expression turning heavier. "As for your wife... she lost a significant amount of blood and went into shock. She's unconscious. We've stabilized her for now, but if she doesn't regain consciousness within the next twenty-four hours, there's a high risk of cerebral hypoxia complications. That means... her brain may have been deprived of oxygen for too long. If she doesn't wake up... we may not be able to guarantee recovery."

Mrs. Lee's knees almost gave out. Mrs. Kim covered her face and sobbed. Taehyung felt like the world slammed into him. He grabbed the doctor's coat with trembling hands. "No... no, she will wake up. She will. She promised me. She promised me she wouldn't leave me. She—she will wake up." His voice cracked so loudly it echoed through the corridor.

They shifted Y/N to a normal ward after stabilizing her. The families were allowed to see the babies—but only from behind the NICU glass, tiny fragile bodies inside incubators, tubes attached to their skin. The doctor allowed Taehyung to go inside the NICU wearing full PPE from head to toe, but he shook his head fiercely. "I won't see them." Everyone turned to him in confusion. He wiped his tears harshly and whispered, "I won't see them without her. I will see my babies with their mother. Not like this. Never like this." His voice broke at the end, but his resolve didn't.

Instead he walked straight to Y/N's room, pushing the door open with trembling fingers. She lay unconscious, pale, still, fragile, wires attached to her arms, the soft beeping of monitors filling the quiet room. He walked toward her slowly, as though afraid she would disappear if he moved too fast. He sat beside her, gently took her cold hand in his warm ones and instantly broke down. "Baby... open your eyes... please..." He leaned forward, pressing kisses on her knuckles, then her forehead, then her cheeks. "Don't tease me anymore... okay? Look... the babies... they're waiting for you. I'm waiting for you. I can't do this without you. I can't..."

He laid his forehead against the back of her hand, shoulders shaking with every silent sob. When the families finally entered quietly, what they saw froze them. Y/N lying still. Taehyung beside her, holding her hand so tightly it was as if letting go would kill him. His face buried against her arm, his entire body trembling.

Mrs. Lee walked to her daughter first, tears rushing down her cheeks as she kissed Y/N's forehead. "My baby... please wake up... mommy is here..." Her voice broke into uncontrollable sobs. Mrs. Kim followed, placing a gentle kiss on Y/N's forehead as well. "Wake up, sweetheart... your family is here... don't scare us like this..."

Both mothers broke down, clutching each other for support while Taehyung watched them, eyes hollow, hand never leaving Y/N's.

The room filled with grief, prayer, trembling breaths, and a silence so heavy it pressed onto every chest.

And in the middle of it, Taehyung whispered again, voice barely audible, "Y/N... come back to me... please..."
