The hospital room was dim, a cold bluish light spilling from the machines that monitored her life second-by-second. Taehyung sat there, his large hand enveloping her much smaller one, thumb softly caressing her skin as if begging her body to respond. The oxygen mask covered half her face, her lashes resting still over her pale cheeks. Too still. Too quiet.
He leaned closer and whispered in a trembling voice, "I'm here... I'm not going anywhere. You're safe now."
But the silence that followed crushed him.
Hours had passed since the surgery. Hours since he heard his babies' cries—proof they were alive—but he refused to go see them. Not without her. His children deserved to be welcomed by both their parents. And she deserved to wake up to them.
Their families had arrived earlier, staying until Taehyung almost begged them to leave for the villa.
"Please... get some rest," he said, voice hoarse and exhausted. "If she wakes up and sees you all exhausted, she'll get worried. I'll call immediately if anything changes."
Mrs. Kim cupped her son's face, wiping his silent tears. "Don't skip even one breath, Taehyung-ah. We are praying for her with every heartbeat."
"Take care of her... of our Y/N," Mrs. Lee whispered, pressing a motherly kiss to Y/N's forehead before leaving.
The moment the door closed, Taehyung's strong façade cracked again. He leaned forward, placing his forehead against her hand, inhaling the familiar scent of her skin mixed with the sterile hospital air.
He looked toward the NICU window where the nurses kept walking in and out. Every hour, a nurse updated him.
"The boy is breathing better now... but both babies still need full support for a few weeks."
Words that should have felt relieving only tightened the fist of anxiety in his chest. Two tiny lives were fighting inside machines. His wife was fighting on this bed.
His family—all three of them—were in a battle that he could do nothing about.
Kim Taehyung, the powerful CEO feared by thousands... here, he was helpless.
He brushed a strand of hair off her forehead.
"Do you know how scared I was today?" His voice cracked as a tear rolled down his cheek.
"I almost lost you... and our babies..."
He shut his eyes, pained just remembering the station, her screams, the blood...
"You promised not to leave me," he whispered. "So wake up and keep that promise. Please."
He kissed her knuckles again and again, like each kiss was a prayer, a bargaining chip with fate.
Minutes turned into hours. The clock hit 4:00 AM. His eyes burned, his back ached, but he couldn't move. His grip on her hand tightened every time the machines beeped a little louder.
Eventually, exhaustion betrayed him. His head slowly rested beside her arm, his fingers locked with hers, breathing unsteady—half sleep, half fear.
He didn't even realize when tears continued to fall even in his sleep.
A faint breath escaped her lips.
Her finger twitched.
It was small—barely noticeable—but to her body, it was a war cry.
A fragile attempt to return.
Her hand moved again. Slight... but real.
Taehyung's eyes shot open instantly—like her soul had called him.
"Y/N?" his voice shook, terrified to hope but desperate for it.
Her brow scrunched just the tiniest bit.
Her eyelids fluttered.
Pure panic and overwhelming joy punched through his chest.
He leapt to his feet, shouting, "Doctor! Doctor!!"
He looked down again, cupping her face gently, terrified his touch might scare her... or hurt her.
"Angel... hey... hey, I'm right here." His voice cracked into a whimper. "Come back to me, love. Please."
A rush of nurses and a doctor stormed into the room, pulling emergency equipment closer, checking monitors, speaking fast medical terms Taehyung couldn't grasp.
One nurse pulled him aside gently, but he refused to let go of her hand.
"No! I'm staying—she wakes up to me or to no one!"
The doctor leaned over her, monitoring her oxygen, calling her name loudly, shining light over her eyes.
Her lashes trembled again.
Taehyung stepped closer, voice barely a breath but full of emotion that could crumble the world.
"I'm right here, love... come back to me."
His lips brushed her forehead softly... desperately.
Her fingers curled weakly around his.
Taehyung sobbed—relief hitting him like a tidal wave.
"She... she moved! She heard me!" He laughed while crying, kissing her hand over and over.
"Y/N, please open those pretty eyes," he whispered, a broken smile forming through tears. "Your babies are waiting... I'm waiting... I can't do any of this without you."
Her eyelids parted slowly—just a sliver.
The moment her dark gaze tried to focus on the world again, Taehyung's knees almost gave out.
"Oh God... sweetheart... you're here... you're with me..."
The doctor smiled with cautious optimism.
"She's responding. Her body is fighting. She needs rest, but this is a very good sign."
Taehyung nodded rapidly, unable to tear his eyes away from her barely-open ones.
He pressed a soft kiss to her hand again.
"I told you... I'm not letting go. Ever."
He broke into more tears—this time, tears of hope.
And finally... after what felt like death creeping too close...
Life blinked back at him.
