Taehyung's hand hadn't left Y/N's bump all evening. Even as he sat beside her at the round table, his thumb rubbed lazy circles against her gown as though keeping silent watch. His eyes, however, weren't calm—they darted across the glittering hall, sharp and cautious, like a hawk guarding its nest.
"Baby, you're making me nervous," Y/N whispered, tilting her head toward him.
Tae didn't even blink. "I don't like this. That man is here." His jaw clenched as his gaze flickered to a corner of the room where a tall figure waited. "He's shady, Y/N. I don't want him near you, let alone knowing your name."
Y/N touched his arm gently. "Then don't let him near me. Go meet him, finish whatever business you need to, and come back quickly. I'll be fine."
His head whipped toward her, brows knitting. "Fine? Alone? Surrounded by strangers? What if—"
"Taehyung," she cut him off softly but firmly, her palm resting against his cheek now. "You've asked me if I'll be okay five times in the last two minutes. I'll be fine. I'm not porcelain, and you don't have to hover every second."
"I do," he muttered stubbornly, his voice low. "You're carrying our babies. I can't... I can't relax when I'm not next to you."
Her lips curved into a small smile, her thumb brushing against his jawline. "Our babies will kick you in protest if you don't stop stressing their mama out."
Almost on cue, a gentle flutter moved under her skin, and Y/N gasped. Taehyung's hand flew to her bump instinctively, and there it was—a strong kick against his palm. His eyes softened instantly, every hard line melting away. "They're awake..." he breathed, his lips parting in awe even after six months. "My little warriors."
Y/N chuckled. "See? They're telling you to relax. Go. Handle your client. I'll be right here when you come back."
Taehyung leaned in, his lips brushing her temple, then trailing to her forehead, then resting against her bump with reverence. "If anyone even looks at you wrong while I'm gone..." His eyes lifted, dark and dangerous. "I'll end them."
"Overprotective much?" Y/N teased, giggling as she nudged his side. "Go, Mr. CEO, before your client thinks you've forgotten him."
Taehyung hesitated a moment longer, scanning her face as if committing every feature to memory, before finally rising from his chair. His hand lingered on hers until the very last second, and only then did he step away, his tall frame disappearing into the crowd.
Y/N sat at the round table, smiling politely at a couple of business associates who had come to greet her. She nodded and responded softly, but her eyes kept drifting toward Taehyung. Across the hall, he was talking to the client he had been so hesitant to meet, his posture tense, jaw tight, and expression sharp. He caught her gaze once, and even in that moment of distance, he mouthed, "You okay?" She gave him a small smile and a reassuring nod, placing a hand on her bump.
But as the minutes stretched, a sudden dryness in her throat made her reach for the glass in front of her. Empty. With a sigh, she pushed her chair back slowly, supporting herself with one hand on the table and the other resting protectively over her belly. She walked toward the drinks section, heels clicking lightly against the marble floor.
At the counter, she reached for a cold water bottle, unscrewing it carefully. Just as she raised it to her lips, a familiar voice broke her quiet moment.
"Y/N? Oh my god, it is you!"
Turning, she found herself face-to-face with an old acquaintance from university, someone she hadn't seen in years.
"Ah—yes, hi!" Y/N smiled politely, keeping her tone warm though she felt a little tired. "Long time no see."
They exchanged quick pleasantries—where life had taken them, how unexpected it was to meet here—and after a few minutes of casual conversation, the person excused themselves with a smile.
Y/N exhaled, turning back toward her table. That's when she heard hurried footsteps approaching.
"Because of you..." A trembling voice cut through the music of the hall.
Y/N frowned and turned. Ryujin stood there, her eyes bloodshot, mascara smudged down her cheeks, breaths coming in sharp bursts.
"Ryujin?" Y/N's brows knitted, her tone careful. "What happened?"
"You happened!" Ryujin spat, her voice shaking with rage and heartbreak. She staggered forward, pointing a finger at Y/N. "Because of you, Jimin doesn't love me. He loves my child... but not me. He's never loved me, not once. It's always been you!"
Y/N's lips parted in shock. "What are you saying? Ryujin, that's not true—"
"Don't!" Ryujin's voice broke, tears streaming as she clutched her chest. "He looks at you like he's starving. He touches me but he imagines you! And it kills me every single day."
Y/N instinctively took a small step forward, her hands raised in a calming gesture. Her other hand protectively cradled her bump. "Ryujin, please... calm down. You're pregnant, just like me. Don't stress yourself, don't do this—"
But before Y/N could finish, Ryujin's grief snapped into violence. With a sudden push, she shoved Y/N backward.
"Ryujin, wait—!" Y/N gasped, trying to steady herself, but behind her were the grand staircase steps. Her heel slipped, and instinctively she reached forward, grasping at Ryujin's arm to stop her own fall. In that desperate second, both of them lost balance.
The world blurred.
Gasps echoed across the hall as the two women tumbled down the stairs. Y/N's scream pierced the air, raw and terrified, her hands clutching at her belly even as she rolled. Ryujin's body hit the ground with a sickening thud, her head striking the marble, blood immediately seeping into her hairline.
Y/N landed just a few feet away, her dress torn at the hem, her hands shaking as she clutched her stomach. A crimson stain spread rapidly across the fabric, and pain shot through her body like fire.
"My—my babies..." she whimpered, voice breaking, eyes wild with fear. "Taehyung...! Save me... please..."
The music cut. The party froze.
"Y/N!!!"
Taehyung's roar ripped through the silence as he sprinted toward the scene, his eyes wide, his face ashen. Behind him, Jimin shoved through the crowd, his heart hammering as he caught sight of Ryujin's unmoving body.
"Y/N!" Taehyung dropped to his knees beside her, his trembling hands pressing against her bloody stomach, as though trying to stop the unstoppable. "No, no, no, baby, stay with me. Look at me, don't close your eyes, please, please..." His voice cracked, desperate, breaking.
Y/N's tears blurred her vision as she reached weakly for his hand. "It hurts... Tae, it hurts so much... our babies... save them..."
"I will, I swear I will!" he choked out, lifting her into his arms despite her cries of pain. "Don't you dare leave me, don't you dare!"
Meanwhile, Jimin fell to the floor beside Ryujin, his hands shaking as he turned her face toward him. "Ryujin! No, no, stay with me—please, God—" His voice broke as he saw the blood smeared across her stomach, her body frighteningly limp. "Someone call an ambulance! NOW!"
Chaos erupted. People shouted, phones dialed emergency numbers, the hall filled with panic.
But all Y/N could hear was the frantic beat of Taehyung's heart against her ear, and all Taehyung could see was the blood staining her dress, soaking his hands.
