Chapter 1: Moving Out
"Jarrett, honey, I need to talk to you..." mom said in a soft voice, patting the seat next to her.
"Am in trouble?" I asked as I made my way to the seat she was patting on.
"No," she answered firmly.
"So why do we need to talk?" I continued to ask as my 7 year old mind started to imagine all the possible reasons why.
She took a deep breath before informing me, "We're moving."
"Moving?" I repeated. Although I actually didn't know what it meant.
"Yes, honey, moving. That means we're going to live somewhere else."
Somehow she knew I didn't get it.
"But why, mommy?" I asked with a frown.
"Because we're not going to fit in this small house anymore," she reasoned with pity in her eyes.
"But it's just the two of us."
She was hesitant to say what she wanted to say next.
"Honey, I don't want to live here..." she said, looking down at her feet.
"Why not?"
"Because this house has too much history... Yes, I love all those memories with your dad before he left but everytime I return home, I just think of him. And I miss him."
Now I know I was just 7, but I actually understood what she meant.
I saw a tear run down her cheek.
"I understand, mommy," I grinned, placing my hands over her hand.
She smiled brightly (although obviously fake). "Good, because you're going to love this new house."
