Chapter 27: Jealousy Ain't Pretty (But Sometimes It Is)

"Hey, mom." I said, sitting next to her on the couch. "Watcha watchin'?"

"I'm watching this new sitcom called The Big Bang Theory." she answered, not even looking at me.

"Um, okay... So anyway, Robin invited me to go to a birthday party with her."

"Who's party?"

"Uh... This girl named Bryn."

"Bryn?" she repeated.

"Yeah. She's Robin's friend's sister."

"Uh... I'm sorry, could you repeat that?"

I groaned. "Anyway... Can I go or not?"

"I don't know sweetie... I mean, I don't even know who this Bryn is. And I've also never heard you talk about her."

"Please mom? Robin will be there."

"Okay, fine. But just because this is great bonding time and I still think you two should end up together."

I chuckled as I rolled my eyes. "Shut up, mom." I joked.

"Hey, Jar." greeted my seatmate, Luke.

"Hey." I greeted back.

"Ugh." he groaned. "Mr. Summers never goes easy on students with no homework."

"You didn't do your homework?"

"Nah, I did," he answered. "I'm just giving you a heads-up. I know you spent the weekend with Robin."

I blushed. "Shut up." I muttered.

"Anywho, what're you doing this weekend?"

"Oh I'm going to this birthday party with... uh... never mind."

"It's Robin, isn't it?" he said with a smirk plastered on his face.

"Shut up."

"Nah, it's cool bro." he said. "Have fun with your girlfriend."

"I-"

Before I could finish what I was saying, Robin came in the classroom. She was accompanied by a tall girl with orange hair.

"Hey, stupid." she said. "I'd like you to meet Bryn."

Bryn held her hand out for me to shake so I shook it.

"Nice to meet you, Bryn." I said with a smile.

She smiled and nodded.

"I can't wait for your party this weekend." I said.

"Oh you should be." she said. "Lots of pretty girls there."

"I don't get it." I said.

I looked at Robin. She was staring at her feet, which was unusual for her.

"Um, can you give us a minute?" I asked Bryn.

"Oh sure." she said before walking out the classroom.

"You okay?" I asked Robin.

She gave me a warm smile. "Uh, yeah, I'm good." she said without looking up.

I looked down too. "What's so interesting about the floor?" I asked.

She looked up and smiled. "Oh, nothing. I, uh, have to get to class now."

Then she immediately bolted.

"Well that was strange." I said to Luke. "Robin doesn't really care about school. Why would she rush off like that?"

He chuckled. "Oh Jarrett." he said. "You don't get it, do you?"

"No, now help me out here!"

"She's clearly jealous because there'll be a lot of pretty girls at Bryn's party."

"But... Why would she be jealous?"

He groaned. "Do I really need to state the obvious?"

I nodded.

"She likes you, stupid."

I was frozen from the outside. But in the inside, I couldn't help but feel... tingly... and excited.

Does she really like me?

"No matter how dumb you can be." muttered Luke.

But I didn't care. For the rest of the day, I was on Cloud 9.
