Cheese and Potato Bake

Ingredients:

115g (4 oz)grated gruyere or strong cheddar cheese

1 egg

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

30g butter

150 mL double cream

675g medium to large potatoes

1 large onion

Cooks Tools:

Shallow baking dish

Bowl

Chopping board

Wooden spoon

Fork

Sharp knife

Potato peeler

Cheese grater

Measuring jug

Saucepan

Step 1: Set the oven to 180°C/350°F. Peel the potatoes and slice them finely. Put them in a bowl of water.

Step 2: Slice the onion finely. Melt the butter in the saucepan over a low heat and cook the onion until slightly soft.

Step 3: Grate the cheese. Butter the baking dish and spread a layer of sliced potatoes on the bottom. Spoon some onions on top.

Step 4: Add salt and pepper, then sprinkle with cheese. Carry on layering potatoes, onion and cheese and finish with potatoes.

Step 5: Beat the egg into the cream with a fork. Pour it over the potatoes and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.

Step 6: bake the potatoes for about 11/2 hours. Test them with a knife to check that they are cooked all the way through.
