It's not that he thought it would last. He just thought that it meant more than it did.He thought it meant more that Phil went to him when he was upset. Surely that was something to be proud of, right? It meant Phil trusted him.
Not really. It turned out to be a more of "I know you'll deal with my shit" kind of thing. Phil knew that Dan would be there, and he took advantage of it.
Phil recently went through a bad breakup. His girlfriend broke up with him for another guy, and he was heartbroken. It was like a stake went through his heart.
Dan didn't like seeing him like that, so he offered to help. He offered to be there as a shoulder to cry on. Phil took the offer, but he pushed it.
Dan became more than that. Phil asked him to be his boyfriend.
Dan, too overwhelmed with happiness, didn't even think this was too soon. He was just happy that apparently Phil returned his feelings.
It never came to him that maybe he was a rebound. Maybe he was a replacement for what Phil had lost.
Even if he did think of it, Dan wouldn't do much about it. He loved being with Phil, and how it happened didn't matter to him.
It didn't matter that it was obvious Phil wasn't over his ex. Dan thought it would be unfair to expect that. But then again, that should've sent him a warning sign.
Dan still cherished the opportunity. He'd been wanting to date Phil for ages, he wasn't going to let this slip through his fingers. This was something he had wanted. But why did it feel off?
It could be because Phil didn't treat him like he was his boyfriend. Phil didn't show a lot of affection, and when he did, it always seemed like he wanted something.
Sure, Phil would kiss him, but it didn't feel like Phil was really into it. He acted as if it was something to get done, like a chore.
Dan didn't like that, of course. But he didn't dare comment.
So, it continued. It was a cycle of Dan just being there whenever Phil needed him, whether it be for emotional support, or for things of physical nature.
Dan just couldn't say no to him.
But then, things took a turn for the worst. Phil was spending less and less time with him. He was always on his phone, and when Dan spotted him like that, he always seemed so happy.
Dan was suspicious, though he didn't think he really had any right to be. Phil would tell him if it was something he should know.
He trusted Phil, so he didn't try to figure out what was going on. But one day, he couldn't just ignore everything that was happening.
Phil approached him one day, by sitting on the sofa, right next to him. He looked at Dan and said, "This isn't working out."
"What?" Dan asked. "What isn't working out?"
"Us," Phil said, taking a sip of his coffee from his mug. "It was nice of you to help me, but luckily, Lucy wants to get back together with me."
Dan honestly didn't know what to say. But he knew he was outraged. "Oh, Lucy? The chick who cheated on you?" He responded calmly, though it was evident he was upset.
Phil raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, why?"
"Are you fucking dumb!?" Dan yelled. "How could you trust her after she did that?!"
"Well, I love her," Phil explained. "And when you love someone, you look past things like that and let it go."
"Oh, as if I don't understand how love makes people blind," Dan retorted. He was finally understanding that Phil had been using him.
Dan stood up abruptly from the sofa, and tried to calm himself down slightly. He didn't want to have a melt down in front of Phil. "I hope she makes you happy," he settled on saying.
Phil nodded. "She does, a lot more than you do."
As if that wasn't just insult to injury. How did Phil expect him to take that calmly?
"Go to hell," Dan snarled, and then he turned and walked out of their apartment.
He had learned from his mistake. Phil never cared about him. Phil just used him as a rebound. And he had been blind until now.
He wouldn't make that mistake again, that's for sure. But that didn't help soothe his heart ache.
