"Hiding away again?" Dan commented, watching as Phil carefully pushed the hotel room door behind him and locked it.
"She's a handful," Phil sighed, sitting on the bed next to him, grabbing his hand. "I just needed to see you again, my love."
Dan smiled sweetly, while on the inside he was disgusted. Maybe he's just the hopeless romantic, but he would think that Phil's girlfriend deserved better.
Dan had been watching them for ages. The two have been together for years, still going strong, actually. Though Dan wouldn't call it strong when Phil's affections so easily transferred to him.
"You need to be more careful," Dan told him. "What if she found out?"
Phil reluctantly let go of his hand, lowering his eyes to the bedsheets. "I suppose you're right," he said quietly.
"I missed you too," Dan lied, his stomach sinking when Phil beams at him.
Maybe he took his game too far. He just wanted to cause some trouble and have some fun, not make the guy fall in love with him. But who's fault was it really?
Was it really his fault if Phil took everything in and digested it as love? The chemicals in his head must've went crazy.
Dan wonders how bad the guy's relationship with his girlfriend is. Does she have any idea, or does she still think they're in love?
Phil glances at him shyly, smiling slightly. "Do you think one day it could be just you and I?" he asked, his cheeks bright red.
If Dan was a better man, he would tell him it would never be so. All it would ever be is them and the other girl on the side, and Dan would never seek otherwise.
But if he was a better man, Dan would have never introduced himself and coerced him into a hotel room.
"Maybe," he decided to say. "Just depends on if you're lucky."
"If we're lucky," Phil corrected, because apparently they are a we.
Dan knows being a home wrecker isn't good and it'll send him to Hell if such a place exists, but he finds himself caring less and less each passing day.
But those thoughts are out of his mind when Phil pushes him down onto the mattress and hovers over him.
---
Phil's staying at the hotel frequently, and Dan doesn't have any illusions as to why. Phil's making his choice, whether he acknowledges it or not.
"How's the other girl?" Dan asked, just to check.
Phil shrugged. "Okay," he said, then he leaned over and kissed him.
Dan pushed him off. "No, seriously," he asserted. "Is she suspicious? Do you think sh--"
"Sh," Phil interrupted, cupping his jaw. "You worry too much."
"You worry too little," Dan retorted. "This'll blow up in your face someday."
Phil sighed, then shook his head. "Dan, stop."
"I'm just speaking the truth," Dan innocently replied. "Do you want me to make it up to you?"
Phil smiled. "Yeah," he gestures to himself. "Come here."
Dan does what he knows best.
---
One day, Phil slams the hotel door behind him, panting heavily.
"Are you okay?" Dan asked, sitting up on the bed.
"I think she knows," he panted. "Actually, I think she followed me here."
Before Dan can say anything, there's a loud knock on the door. "Is he in here?" An angry voice yelled.
Phil turned to look at Dan with horror in his eyes, confirming that it's his girlfriend. Dan ignores him and opens the door.
The fury on her face is almost unbelievable. "Is Phil in here?" she spat.
Dan moved aside to let her in, and she pushed past him. She yells when she sees Phil on the bed.
"I told you this would blow up in your face," Dan told him, frowning.
"This isn't what you think it is!" Phil exclaimed quickly, desperate to appease her. "I swear, this is just a meeting about work."
She growled at him, and held up her ring. "Why did you ask me to marry you if you didn't love me?"
Dan hadn't known they were engaged.
"I do love you!" Phil yelled, "I swear! It's only you, baby."
"That's strange," Dan spoke up, "'Cause you tell me you love me every time we make love."
The girl looked absolutely furious, and Phil sends him a betrayed look.
"I don't even know this guy's name," Phil grinds his teeth.
Dan turned to face the girl. "You should pawn that ring on your finger," he told her. "It's worth more than his love for you."
She doesn't need another hint. But instead of taking the ring somewhere to sell it, she pulls it off her finger and throws it on the ground and storms out of the room.
"What was that?" Phil asked him, scowling.
Dan doesn't answer, instead looking at the ring.
Phil's eyes soften. "Is that it?" he asked gently, a smile framing his face. "You just wanted her out of the picture..."
Phil picks up the ring from the ground, and goes on one knee, looking up at Dan hopefully.
"What are you doing?" Dan asked, bewildered. He knew Phil was stupid, but not this stupid.
"Marry me," Phil said. "It could be just us now."
Dan steps away from him, watching his face fall. "There was never an us," Dan explained. "You were in love and I was not. You ruined your relationship over a guy who could never love you."
"What?" Phil's face paled, and he clutches the ring so tightly it probably hurts.
"I've been playing you the entire time," Dan sighed. "Please get out of my hotel room."
Phil stays frozen on one knee before standing up after a moment. He glared at Dan. "No."
Dan doesn't mess around and pushed Phil out of the room, locking the door so he couldn't get back in.
He's not a good person, but he figured Phil is worse than him.
Maybe they'll both meet again in Hell.
