"There is only one fate for people like us," His mother would whisper when everybody was asleep. Her tone was one of bitter acceptance. "It is to be feared and hunted down."

She would look at her son, who was still so young. They were hoping to create a place where people like them could peacefully live. If all went to plan, her son would have an okay life. He would live with some comfort.

That was enough for her to give up her life, just like her husband had done.

Dan yawned and stretched as he woke up. He checked his clock and scrunched his nose. It read 6:00 PM. That was pretty much on point for when he had to go to school.

He got his things ready quickly, not even bothering to fix his appearance. What was the point? It would just be a waste of time for him.

He left his shitty apartment and walked along the roads. It was the perfect time to be out. It was slowly getting darker and darker, and he just loved the beauty of the night sky.

He made it to the school after a good ten minute walk. This school was special to others, which is why Dan went there. This school operated during normal day hours and night hours. The day hours were occupied by humans, and the night hours by people like Dan. Vampires.

Being a vampire wasn't difficult like it used to be. Back in the day, the humans would brutally kill every vampire they could. The only reason they didn't do it now was because of a war that ended with a treaty. The treaty called for coexistence. Essentially, humans would not harm vampires if vampires did not harm them first.

Obviously, the humans and the vampires had to change things for this to work. For instance, vampires almost never drank human blood now. Humans had to open up and let vampires in. Due to the fact that these changes were still recent, most humans were still scared of vampires.

Dan was about to walk into the school, when he spotted a figure leaning against the building. He could tell it was a human. He didn't really care for humans. But for some reason, he just couldn't help but be fascinated by this particular one.

The boy, who had noticed Dan look at him, did not look scared. He should've, because Dan was a vampire. But he didn't. Dan frowned.

"What are you looking at?" the boy snarled at him.

Dan, who for some reason had the urge to frighten the boy, appeared closer to him. He smiled, making sure to show his fangs, "Oh, nothing, nothing."

The boy stared at him for a moment before chuckling. "Funny."

Dan wasn't aiming for funny. But he lost interest. "See ya," he said before turning and walking away.

The boy just watched him leave silently.

------

A week later, Dan is at the boy's house. It is 11 PM, and he is not only sitting by the boy, but also by two other humans. They were the boy's friends apparently.

"Can you see yourself in a mirror?" One of the boy's friends asked.

Dan rolled his eyes. "Duh. That's just one of the myths humans came up with."

"Do you have parents?" The other friend asked.

This was a sore spot for Dan. He didn't really remember them. They both died when he was very young. It still hurt, because every day he could feel the loss.

He knew they died for a noble cause though. His parents had been in the war, and that war was the beginning for all vampires everywhere.

Dan's coping mechanism was sarcasm. "Well geez, where do you think I came from? Nowhere?" Dan said, once again rolling his eyes.
