Dan was notorious for playing the most ultimate of pranks. He swore he could trick anyone, and he wasn't opposed to playing dirty.
Scared of clowns? Well, Dan doesn't mind going to the nearest Party City and spending a bunch of money to devise a believable evil clown costume. Hearing people's screeches of terror and fear really made him feel happy.
Knowing this, Phil was obviously his prime target. He was the perfect target as well, as he was the perfect mix of gullible and kind. If he wasn't so gullible, then he wouldn't fall for Dan's pranks anymore even though Dan did them frequently, and if he wasn't so kind, then he would probably be very pissed at him for the pranks.
And yet, there's a part of him that knows he pranks Phil for another reason entirely. The thing is, after all this pranking, Phil's typical response is a cute squeak, and after that, a fond rendition of his name. Dan would by lying if he said that hearing that didn't make his heart race.
April Fool's was just the perfect time to unleash some great pranks, so he started plotting.
Phil was just too adorable and too good for this world, and Dan was just a gremlin who liked other people's misery.
Besides, if they're miserable, then he isn't miserable. Logically, this was all a coping mechanism.

Dan knew the easiest way to freak Phil out. It was cheap, and honestly not that creative, but it was guaranteed to have good results. Besides, who said Dan doesn't have anything to gain from this?
Dan was going to kiss him. It would freak Phil out, who would pull away quickly and ask him what the heck he was doing, in that adorable way of his.
That's what he thought would happen, at any rate.
On the morning of April 1st, Dan (who had set an alarm to make sure he woke up before Phil) tiptoed out of his room and into Phil's. For a moment, he just listened to the sound of Phil's breathing and his quiet snores like the creeper he is.
But he shook himself out of it. He walked over to him, and after a brief moment of hesitation, leaned down to kiss him.
And well, Dan can't say he was expecting that Phil would just reciprocate it once he woke up. He definitely wasn't expecting Phil to wrap his arms around him and pull him down closer to him, but it was not like he was complaining. This was a nice turn of events, he decided.
Once both of them decided they needed air, they pulled away from the pleasant kiss. "What was that for?" Phil sleepily smiled at him, making Dan aww to himself.
Dan didn't have the heart to tell him he only intended it to be a prank, because he knew it wasn't true. He knew there was just a part of him that always wanted to kiss Phil, and he only sought the opportunity through the part of him that was a prankster. "I just felt like it," he explained simply.
Phil chuckled quietly. "Well, it was a nice way to wake up."
Dan grinned to himself. "Should I do it more often?" he winked.
"Definitely," Phil smiled.
And so Dan did.
Turns out pulling pranks can land you a cute boyfriend.
