Chapter 09 ~ James route 1 ~ What is it you wish to become?

[Skippable if you are not into James, can be read as common route]

I had to be patient for a couple of days but after breakfast saturday morning James told me to meet him at the library. Sam, Damien and Matthew were getting groceries and Erik was sleeping in. I had found myself in the library more often. The subjects of the present books were not exactly easy but did give me more insight on certain subjects. Now I stood in front of the door and was about to knock. I do not know why but I was nervous. Perhaps because it was about my future, one I never thought I could have. James however the past few days did seem more distant and more easily irritated. The latter I was not used from him at all. I knocked three times and opened the door seeing James behind a task with a laptop in front of him. Also there were a pile of books next to it. Judging by the one on top, educational since it read biology and life sciences.

''Please come in.'' James said calmly. I eyed James briefly before I entered the room. From all five brothers he was most mature and calm. It was a shame however that he was so busy with the toy company but the days he and I spent together, James did make them count.

I closed the door behind me and went to the desk. James had apparently put a second stool down and gestured me to take a seat. I did not have a lot of computer experience but the past several weeks it sure as hell proved useful to look up a lot of information about the world I now lived in. Even though whilst searching I ended up finding things that a regular succubus or incubus would find amusing to say the least.

''Well, since you've decided to go to school before anything else there are a few things we must determine. First, is how much you know without the books. The second, is a career choice test. We know you are not human but do not know what you are exactly however the trick is to learn how to live without using magic of any sort. My brothers and I actually have barely used our powers ever since we got here although I do admit without enthrallment I would not work where I currently do but that was more a necessity. I did know what was going to be expected of me and I love the work that I do even though it is a lot.''

''I do not know in what kind of line I wish to work and dedicate myself.'' I admitted. There were various branches and each had their own specialisations too.

''Whatever comes out of these tests see them as guidelines. Whatever the results, they are not written in stone.'' James said and placed a hand on my shoulder.

''Alright. Let's do this.'' I say with a lopsided grin and got to work. I did not know where the confidence came from. James presented me a variety of intelligence tests and what amazed both him and me was that I actually did not do to bad regarding math, physics, science and languages. I did not bother using the calculator either. The first time James had offered it I had solved the problem already by the time he wanted to suggest it. But when it came to human history, and other subjects where logic could not be applied I failed miserably. It was religion and religious history though I shone in the most. On occasion James explained the nature of the question if it was asked in a confusing way but other than that I did the work by myself.

''You did good.'' James whispered which sent a chill down my spine since his face was so close to my own. It was a good chill though. ''It will still take a few weeks till months until it is safe to enroll you in a school but in the meantime you could read books on subjects you were not so good at. You will have to do a test at a school before you enroll there. They will reveal what you already know and decide whether they will accept you or not.''

I nod in agreement. ''I would like that. I just hope I am able to absorb all that knowledge.'' I fumbled with my fingers a bit, something that stopped when James took hold of my hands. ''If not, that is alright too.'' he assured. I noticed his hands were trembling and he was soon to let go. ''The career choice tests though, for those I will not sit next to you since that could maybe cause me to influence them.'' he got on his feet and walked towards one of the big comfy chairs near the bookcases. ''I could sit by you but an expression for example, even a sigh could reveal what I wish you would choose. What I wish is best for you and not all jobs guarantee a well paying job. Some jobs are even voluntary based. I will not leave the room though so if there are any questions about things you get I will be able to answer them.'' he assured. From a table next to his chair, he took a book and opened it. The way he held the book though was not relaxed at all but I decided not to ask. If he moved himself away from me he would probably have his reasons other than the mentioned one. I could not help to have the feeling in the back of my head that I actually already knew what was wrong with him.
