The lights were on the mansion to which my eyes adjusted to quickly. As James and I walked though there was not a single one of his brothers in sight. James guided me to a room with a large dining table. In the corner stood something covered with a large sheet of fabric but that was not what I was focussed on for long. I separated myself from James and rushed towards a window. I could see the sky gaining many colours as dawn arrived.
''Miss?...'' James asked as my hands touched the cold glass that forged the barrier between me and the outside world. I did not reply to James and I felt tears forming in my eyes.
James joined me placing a hand on my shoulder. ''Miss are you alright?'' again I did not answer. ''I never thought I would see the sun rise again. Am I really free now?...'' I asked. My voice breaking.
''You are [___] and you will remain free. My father will never get his hands on you again I swear it.''
'His father..' I thought. My mind instinctively trying to place the puzzle piece but James snapped me out of it. Still, there were some words I wanted to say.
''James... I want to apologise.'' My words puzzled and sort of shocked him..
''What for?'' he asked. ''You did nothing wrong. As a matter of fact you saved my brothers and me.'' He kept his calm composure as he spoke.
''I am anxious to know how I did that, but that aside. I said that I did not remember anything. However, I do know you and your brothers. My words must have hurt in some way.''
James now had both hands on my shoulder and locked his eyes with mine. ''Look. We had just not expected it. You did pat Matthew and responded quite well. Combine that with our enthusiasm to finally see you wake up, it overwhelmed us a bit. Also, we have experienced some hardship lately which has been weighing on us heavily. So please, do not feel guilty. I bet your memories will come back in no time.'' James assured. ''At the least you did not change personality wise.''
I felt him gently squeeze my shoulders. ''Now. Why don't you enjoy the sunrise. The others will be here soon. I think half an hour.''
''And what will you do then?'' I asked out of curiosity.
''I miss, am going to prepare breakfast. I bet you are hungry too.'' James replied with a smile and he released my shoulders.
Come to think of it. When was the last time I ate? I did not pursue the train of thought. I Had noticed already that I was thin. Not starved but certainly not having received what I needed. ''I could help you know. With preparing breakfast.'' I suggest before James was about to go through another door. My words made him stop.
''A sunrise is nice and all but... I would feel bad to let you do all the work.'' I swallow, awaiting James's answer.
''Alright.'' He started. ''Under one condition. If you even feel the slightest hint of fatigue you will sit down at the table. Understood?'' he smiled but the worry in his eyes did not seem to leave him. Was my current state really worrying him this much?
''Deal.'' I reply much to James' relief and I join him.
In the kitchen I helped him with some of the easier tasks; whisking eggs with cream, salt and pepper from which James made scrambled eggs with some kind of deliciously smelling meat which James called bacon.
After making batter for pancakes though I noticed my legs started to tremble. I wanted to continue helping him but a promise was a promise.
''I'm sorry James I think I need to sit down...'' I started but James did not allow me to finish my sentence. ''That is alright Miss. I will take it from here.'' He smiled warmly and I nod.
