The weeks passed by before I knew it. In the weekends James and Erik would teach me how to dance. Sam on the other hand seemed be called upon more often due to a series of violent crimes. Some crimes made the news and people had started to get more nervous since rumors spread that it was a violent gang. Due to these crimes though Sam was away more often. He could still bring me to school but not pick me up unless I would stay until late so I ended up taking the bus. Today was another school day. Rain poured out of the sky like there was no tomorrow and I found myself staring at the dark clouds. Class still had to start and it was far from quiet. ''Hey did you hear? A group of people were found dead shredded and torn apart beyond recognition. The bite marks are the same as the assault crimes from the past few weeks.'' one of my classmates whispered. ''Really? Do the police have any leads?'' another asked. ''A few. It is a group of approximately twelve individuals with aggressive dogs. It is thought they reside in a building that is being renovated or built. That was all I heard from my brother and father as they were discussing the case together since they are both on the team investigating this.'' When hearing this I wondered if Sam was on their team as well. ''[___]... the one who drives you here works for the police too right?'' Leylia asked and I nodded. ''He is although he does not discuss cases at home. At the least not with me.'' I replied.

I had noticed too that more students were brought and picked up from school. Some said as well they were not even allowed by their parents to go out after dark. The school was even considering a curfew despite being not exactly in the city itself. ''These crimes make it more difficult to actually shop for my Halloween Ball costume.'' Leylia said with a sigh. A costume... I had not even thought about it a lot. ''Who are you going with.'' I asked Leylia who smiled. ''With Bleys. He asked me the other day you should have seen him. Red as a tomato.'' Leylia whispered and I giggled. I could only imagine although it made me wonder who I should ask. Standing so close with James and Erik when they were teaching me made me realise I could not just ask anyone. Sam had crossed my mind multiple times but formal festivities were not exactly things he liked what I could recall from memory. ''You do not have anyone yet do you.'' Leylia asked and I shook my head. ''I do not have a costume either.'' I sighed. And with the crimespree and my current funds it was not likely I could buy one too. I tried some online stores but the Halloween outfits I encountered showed way to much skin for it to be appropriate. ''What were you thinking about coming as?'' Leylia asked and I thought for a moment. ''An undead bride, lady in white or a banshee. I can sow but even then I will need fabric.'' I said and Leylia pondered before nodding. ''I suppose I can not do anything else but help a friend in need. I have a white bedspread with mesh and a white dress that needed fixing but never got to it. I will bring them with me. It will need some adjusting though since I am a little bit smaller but it should be alright.'' she said. ''Are you sure? Would the dress not be ruined?'' I asked and she shook her head. ''It's fine really. You can cut holes in it all you want. You may want to come with me though after school on the day of the ball. I want to do your makeup.'' she stated. ''Makeup...'' I repeated but smiled. ''Alright. I will be in your hands just do not make me look like a clown. Not to mention I still need a partner to ask to the dance.'' I laughed but everyone's conversation was put to an end when the teacher entered the room asking for silence despite understanding that everyone was worried.

With the fabrics and dress Leylia had given me I ended up making a pretty nice costume. The dance lessons were going smoothly as well and Erik took the time to teach me how people danced to more modern music in case the type of music would change during the Halloween dance (or in case I would drop by in his nightclub) but even when I only had a week left, I was still struggling with whether I should ask Sam or not. He was busy with work but most of the time we spent together was nice. Yet I could not help but feel as if something was off either. It was as if a rift was growing between him and me and if that was the case I had no idea what I had done to cause it or what to do to mend it. ''Alright Miss, I think you have learned everything I can teach you.'' James said with a proud smile. ''Thank you James.'' I smiled but it seemed that James saw that there was something on my mind as well. ''Is there something wrong?'' James asked and I nodded. ''It might sound stupid but... how do you ask someone to attend a ball with you. I know, it is late and I should have asked it sooner but I just kept postponing this. I tried to bring it up but I always felt nervous'' I admitted and sighed. ''Who did you think about asking.'' James asked as he sat down on the seat next to me. ''...Sam. He always seems so excited when the subject of Halloween comes up. I know he has been organising some kind of horror movie night with all of us here as well on October the 31st with many kinds of themed food. But he has been... distant lately when I was near him. I do not know what I did wrong or how to mend it but at one moment he is the same old Sam that I know and then he suddenly is distant and says he has something to attend before rushing off. Even if I would ask him... he never liked the social gatherings like balls and formal dances. I am an idiot aren't I...'' I said and James shook his head. ''I think you are afraid that he declines Miss.'' James said as he adjusted his glasses. ''Is it that simple?'' I asked and James only smiled. ''I know that when it involves things you find important, that you become afraid. If you want you can practise on me though. The asking that is, I can not answer for him.'' James suggested. ''So what you are saying actually is that I should put my uncertainties aside and ask.'' I said and James nodded. ''Indeed Miss. If you do not ask you will never know.'' I waited briefly before taking a breath. James was probably right and if practising worked it was worth a shot. ''Sam I... I like you a lot and I know I should have asked sooner but I was wondering, would you like to go to the Halloween ball at school with me.'' I released the breath I held. ''Now. Who could say no to that.'' James said with a smile. I heard a noise though and looked at the door where it came from. It was slightly open but could swear I had closed it when I got in. ''Come on. Go tell him.'' James said after placing a hand on my shoulder and gently squeezed it. I got on my feet with a confident smile and thanked James before leaving.
