The 'proper' time to tell Matthew the secret of his power in the end did not come. He did not ask me either. I had decided that James could place the mind barrier as well. It only counted for unwanted entities but Erik was still able to enter my dreams and Damien could still hear my thoughts.
Sam dropped me off by school again. I still had time left so headed to the library. Waltz being the school's librarian, would hopefully already be there. I was right and thankfully there were not a lot of people there.
''Good morning Waltz, did you have a good weekend?'' I asked him as I returned a book I loaned. He greeted me with his usual kind smile. ''I did thank you. How was yours? Were you not to tired after a full week of school?'' he asked.
I shook my head. ''No not that much.'' I assured him. I did not tell him about the nightmare though. Despite him being my mentor it was none of his business. ''Waltz, I couldn't help but notice that when you want our student and mentor bonding time, that it is during PE. Is it coincidental or not?'' I smiled when asking and while I did he took the book and put it down on a special pile which contained books that were returned. Waltz looked at me with a bitter smile. ''I suppose I made it a bit to obvious but yes. Despite we have a no bullying policy, students are rude and mean. It is a culture you are not used to. If you were to be judged by your physical scars and people tease you we can only help you if we know who they are. And nobody likes being told on making it worse.'' he explained. ''Not to mention bullying tends to not only be verbally.''
''I understand your reasons but would like to try anyway. Most of my life I have been not allowed to do much so what I can catch up with, I'd like that. But it is impossible if I keep being protected to much. Not to mention... if people realise I receive a special treatment it is likely that will retaliate as well.''
Waltz nodded in understanding. ''Do you think you can handle it?'' he asked on a serious tone. He had the expression to back it up with. ''I could handle myself with Erin Rindou. So yes, I want to try. The worst people can call me I suppose is scar girl and if that is the best they can throw at me I will be fine. The only thing I can not participate in is swimming mainly due to the fact that I can not swim.''
The latter seemed to surprise Waltz at first. ''Is there nobody who can teach you?'' he asked to which I shook my head. ''The ones I live with are busy enough themselves and I don't even know if all of them can swim to begin with. I had looked for lessons online but I have no job so can not afford it. I do not want my adoptive brothers to pay for it either. They have been paying enough things for me.''
''Well...'' Waltz said as he rubbed the back of his head. ''I do not mind teaching you but I will not be able to until January so that will take a while. If a job is what you seek, I might be able to help you with that if you like. I could use an extra hand in the library but that does mean that after school you will be stuck here, with me. It does not pay much but comes with some benefits. If you prefer something else, there is a small café in the city run by a former student whom I mentored. I could introduce you although I do warn you. The café is a cosplay café.'' he added.
''Cosplay?...'' I asked to which Waltz pondered before answering. ''Cosplay is a form of dress up. Instead of normal waitress outfits you'll get to wear a variety of costumes that resemble characters from many sources such as games or series. If I were you I'd discuss it with your guardians first before making a decision. For now I recommend to go to class.''
''Yes Sir.'' I replied to Waltz and thanked him before heading to where my timetable wanted me to go.
After lunch, it was the hour of truth since the day was finished with gym classes after the break. In my enthusiasm however I was already dressed in my gym clothes before the class was even there and made my way to the field outside. Despite I was not feeling shame for my scars, my shirt was long sleeved and my pants long. Both having the school emblem sewn on them. The weather was still gentle enough for the gym classes to be outside, however the first signs of fall certainly had started to show.
''My my. It does not happen often that someone is this early without a grumpy face. You must be [___].Nice to finally see you in my class.'' An energetic and athletic middle aged man approached me, jogging as he did so. My name is Sir Valiant, I shall be your main instructor for PE. Feel free to ask any questions. Are you familiar with gymnastics or sports in general?'' he asked and I shook my head. ''I can not say I have been doing physical exercise whatsoever.'' I admitted.
''I see. No problem though, just show me you are putting effort into it. A few of your classmates sport on a professional national level. If you feel lightheaded take a break to breathe. Would not want you to pass out on the track.''
''Understood Sir.'' I reply with a shy smile. The rest of the students started to show one by one as well.
During gymnastics I noticed that my physical condition was not exactly terrible but it certainly was far from good. At some point I needed a breather but was quick to join the rest again. When the class was over Sir Valiant suggested that if able it would be good for me to run a lap around the track before or after school. When one round was manageable for me though I did have to add a second. I suppose it was not to much of a bad idea.
After two hours of running, sweating and a variety of exercises it was time to get out of our gym clothes and shower. Everyone was talking aloud but when I disrobed it started to get silent. ''Oh my God [___] what happened to you...'' one of my classmates asked. My gaze went to her questioning and noticed she was looking at the scars on my skin. ''Oh... well.'' I started but Lucilla intervened. ''You do not have to answer if you do not want to...'' she sounded worried but I gave her a reassuring smile. ''It is better they hear it from me instead of wild stories and speculations go all about.'' I replied and took a deep breath.
''Many years back a man captured me and used me as a playtoy. An object for him to use and abuse any way he saw fit. My first attempt to escape failed but I succeeded with help on the second. It however left its marks. It's fine though really. I do not care what he left behind on my skin.'' I finished disrobing and took a towel and some soap before going to the showers finding myself being followed by my classmates and the conversation.
''How did you escape exactly?'' one of them asked but Lucilla quickly cast that girl a glare resulting her to silence up. The showers seemed to be motion sensored or something since they turned on by themselves. ''To be very honest Lenne, I have no idea. I was not in a right state of mind and it is a very big blur for me.'' I replied to her and started to wash the sweat off my skin. I could practically feel all their eyes on me so turned towards them again.
''Look. There is no need to pity me or anything. Sure it is not a pretty sight but what happened, is in the past. I am working towards my future hence I decided to go to school.''
There were some whispers and others decided to shower as well but there were not any more questions mainly because Lucilla made them not to. It was visible they were filled with questions however but none of them dared asking. Either afraid to get scolded by Lucilla or afraid of the answer I was going to give.
Their reactions though did make me think. Would these scars ever fade away? I was good at pretending I had moved on but to be frank every time I looked at them myself I was reminded of where I had been. They made me feel disgusting even at those moments until I would tear my eyes from them or whatever reflective surface revealed them to me.
I never tore my eyes away though before saying I would not let it get to me. Hopefully one day I would start to believe the lie.
