A young boy who wore a long scarf around his neck sat down on a chair that is placed besides his friend. He watched as she continued her deep slumber. Looking miserable and peaceful at the same time. Her body all ready so thin and pale as her pink hair flower aimlessly against her chest.
Wires that lead to machines were inserted into her skeleton-like body. These machines kept her going, but it sadly couldn't make her last long enough for a single year.
Diggie-the young boy pulled out a piece of paper and a pen out of his coat's pockets. He placed the paper on top of the nearest nightstand. Beginning to write a letter for her two friends.
Nana had an accident nearly a month ago. She fell and hit her head. Hard enough that it created a traumatic brain injury, thus causing a coma. Diggie is aware that Nana wanted to see her friends-Harley and Cyclops one more time before her time arrives, because he had been watching her look at the two with sad eyes. She has a crush in Harley, but Harley loved someone else.
Fortunately, Diggie is always there when Nana needed support or a shoulder to cry on. He liked-no, he loved his friend. But he's too afraid to confess his feelings since Nana liked someone else. He now regrets not telling her before the accident happened. Now, Nana might never know that someone actually loved her.
When he finished his writing. Diggie pulled out an envelope and placed the paper inside and hoped that it'll arrive to Harley and Cyclops. Then he closed his eyes and let out a sigh, recalling the time-the last time that he and Nana talked.
It was a cold day, but it didn't snow. Winter was coming and Nana was excited to see the snow fall towards to the ground. Silently she waited for Christmas and New Year to arrive. What gifts will she receive? She didn't ask for much. All she wanted was someone she can be with for the years that has yet to come. Toys or fancy clothes won't make her happy. Someone that can make her smile wide and make her heart feel all giddy and fluttery will make every year memorable and everyday worthwhile. Diggie made her smile with his bad jokes, but never achieved to make her heart beat for him. It was rather sad, but he didn't mind as long as he can see her beautiful smile everyday.
"Diggie! Can you come by to my house next week? I've invited Harley and Cyclops to come over to bake some cookies!" Nana asked as she held Diggie's cold hands. His cheeks quickly going red, but it wasn't visible enough to be seen as a blush. "I won't miss it for the world." Diggie answered with a faint smile as his eyes locked into hers. He hasn't visited Nana's house since he's always so busy studying science and planes. Diggie still couldn't decide if he wants to become a pilot or a scientist when he grows up. "Christmas is coming soon! And New Year's Eve! I accidentally fell asleep last year so I couldn't see the fireworks." Nana grumbled angrily, her cheeks puffing out adorably. "U-Um...We can watch the fireworks together. Come to my house in New Year. We have a great view of the city, it'll sure to make you awe-struck." Diggie asking Nana to come to his house took a lot of courage and guts. He was trembling so much that he looked like he was freezing to his death.
Nana pulled her pink scarf out of her neck and placed it around Diggie since he was trembling. "Promise me we'll see the fireworks together? Also, let's head back inside. You're trembling to your doom!" Nana gently grabbed one of Diggie's hand and pulled him towards to a restaurant. They were currently in a park. Nana wanted to go out and take a stroll, but ended up meeting Diggie and talking to him instead. Diggie lifted his free hand up to the pink scarf, holding its soft fabric gently. He instantly felt warmth upon wearing it. "I promise we'll see the fireworks. But, can you honestly tell me something?" His usual joy tone around Nana suddenly changed into something that is similar to being serious. Nana quickly took notice of this and stopped pulling him. Turning herself to face her friend and replied: "Sure, what is it?"
"Well, why do you keep hanging around with Harley and Cyclops? Doesn't it hurt you?" His question surprised Nana that it almost made her jaw drop. She didn't know that Diggie is aware that she is indeed getting hurt whenever she would see Harley and Cyclops being together. Nana couldn't turn away now, it is useless in hiding when Diggie all ready knows. "It's better to see and greet your friends and family than not to see them. Because you may not know that today will be the last time you'll ever get to see them. Treasure every moment." Nana answered as she gently bit her lip. Trying her hardest to not let a single tear drop down to her cheeks. Diggie didn't want to make or see her cry, but it's better to leave the bottle's cap open than closed. "You should have told me than keeping it for yourself. I'll make it less painful for you." He said softly, wrapping his arms around her to give her a hug. When his eyes shifted towards to the nearby trees. He swore he could have seen someone watching, but it could have been his imagination. Nana wrapped her arms around him to return the hug. Letting her tears drop down to her face. "Thank you, Diggie." She said with a warming smile on her face. Diggie smiled back, lifting one of his hands to her face. Wiping her tears away. "I'll always give you a shoulder to cry on. Don't ever forget that I'll always stay by your side!" His smile turned wider as he gently patted her head. The touch of her hair felt so silky and smooth. Nana smiled widely as well. Lifting her head up to look up at him. "I won't ever forget!"
When Diggie stopped recalling his memories. He didn't notice until he opened his eyes that he was crying. He lifted both of his hands up to his face to wipe his own tears away. His eyes quickly gazing into Nana's unconscious body.
He was about to smile in seeing her still okay until the heart monitor suddenly began to show Nana's heartbeat becoming abnormal. Diggie did not hesitate to stand out of his seat and rush out of the room and hysterically call out a nurse to come over. "Help! My friend is having trouble!" He was shouting at the top of his lungs. He didn't care if his throats will hurt afterward, all he cares about Nana. He wasn't letting her die now.
A nurse quickly ran towards him. Diggie didn't wait for the nurse to come close to ask what's the problem. He merely just quickly ran back to Nana's room without a second thought. The nurse followed behind him and once they saw Nana's heart monitor. They called out nearby nurses to come over and help get Nana arrive to the emergency room as fast as possible. Diggie watched as a group of nurses take his friend away. Quickly following behind them as they rushed down, taking Nana to the emergency room. He was stopped by a guard when he got too close to the emergency room. He was told that he wasn't allowed inside and is only able to wait from afar. Diggie did wait. Anxiety filling his mind and pain stabbing his heart. Hoping and praying that Nana will be all right and wake up from her coma.
Weeks passed by. It was New Year's Eve. Diggie walked out of his house that was close to the edge of a hill. It showed a glamorous and beautiful view of the city that is built below. He loved seeing it every time-especially in New Year when the fireworks would light up the night sky. He took his seat on the grassy ground as his eyes stared aimlessly at the city. "You were right. It is a great view!" Nana spoke beside him with that everlasting happy smile of hers. Her bright eyes staring at the city as well. Diggie turned his head to look at his friend, a faint smile forming underneath his scarf. "I promised you didn't I? That we'll see the fireworks together." He pulled out a pink scarf. His hand gripping on to its fabric tightly as if he didn't ever want to let it go. "Thank you for keeping that promise and for always staying beside me when I was in that coma." Nana said softly as the wind as her smile began to become faint. Her eyes locking into Diggie's. "It's better to see and greet your friends and family than not to see them. Because you may not know that today will be the last time you'll ever get to see them. Treasure every moment. That's what you told me." Diggie replied as he buried his head into the pink scarf that Nana gave him. His tears coming out and dropping down to his face. "I'm truly sorry, Diggie. Don't ever forget that I'll always stay by your side. That's what you told me." Nana said as she wrapped an arm around her crying friend.
Diggie allowed himself to cry more. Wanting every single sadness out of his body that he held in after her death. She wasn't here breathing and alive while she talked to him. She was just an imaginary, a fantasy.
Once he heard the sound of the fireworks. He lifted his head up to watch and spoke his first sentence of this new year. "Let's see the Fireworks together, Nana."
