I feel like he's not always mad that they live in (or better underneath) Manhattan. But he always loved being outside. Especially Brooklyn. It might be the skyline, the bridge, the mixture of old and new. He was fascinated with it. Depending on where they were it wasn't as fancy as other parts of New York, it was raw, sometimes dirty. He totally identifies with it. He might have spent hours / nights there on patrol and got used to the accent and people.
