Catching a robot was more tedious than I thought.
After I convinced everyone that I was fine- even though I truly wasn't- we had went straight to work and started tracking this rogue robot down. But to our wonderful luck we came up empty. Today, however, we were looking through the databases he scavenged to get an idea of his motive, and so far the investigation was going well...
"Stop playing with that rock and eat your food." Natasha bossed without even turning around to look at me on the floor, speed typing away on the computer while the guys did nerd stuff.
I stopped hovering the rock between my hands and morphing it into shapes before sending her a stony look. She couldn't see me because her back was turned, but then she stopped typing and slowly turned around to face me. I think she gives a new definition of having eyes in the back of your head.
"Don't make me ask again." She warned with a stern expression.
I let out a sigh and unfolded my legs, doing what she said. As I got up, she nodded once like her work with me was done and went back to speed typing on the computer. I put the rock in my pocket for the time being and pulled up the chair beside her, looking down at the plate of eggs, bacon and pancakes, contemplating what to eat first as I sat and picked up the utensils. I didn't mean to be petty about eating it, I just wasn't in the mood to eat solid foods. Bruce said that I could begin eating normal foods, but the timing for such a milestone in my recovery was an overwhelming hurdle since we're currently tracking down a self conflicted robot going through an existential crisis.
The topic of the robot was an elephant in the room that everyone knew about and what we already addressed, but to Tony it was a huge mistake he knew would haunt him for years to come. I could feel the tension and frustration that he hid behind his million dollar smile. I could see right through his facade because I too wore one. Especially when he personally apologized to me for throwing this curveball after my attack. I accepted his apology of course and tried reassuring him that I was fine- as well as everyone else over a dozen times- but I could tell he still held himself accountable.
Then Jake was another thing. Even though we truly were in this mess because of Tony and Bruce's mistake, he would undoubtedly remind them of it. He would cast them a look whenever they were in the same room or not acknowledge them at all, and I talked to him about this seriously overprotective behavior but it seems it only went in one ear then out the next. I appreciate what he does but his clinging can be seriously annoying at times. So when he went to go help Maria with something about a half hour ago, I was relieved of his presence, but I also realized that this has been the longest amount of time we've been separated since I got back.
As I stabbed the pancakes that were already pre-cut for me -courtesy of the chef- I heard the sound of footsteps coming, snapping me out of my thoughts. I glanced up and Steve walked in with a serious expression on his face and a tablet in hand. Thor had came over to check out some stuff with Natasha so when Steve reached us by the table he handed him the tablet. I watched quietly with prying eyes as Thor stared down at the electronic within his grasp.
"What's this?" Tony asked suddenly from behind me.
I looked up at him as he made his way closer to the guys then glanced between them as Thor looked at the tablet. Steve noticed me looking and met my gaze for a moment, but then looked away oddly for some reason...
"A message." He started when Thor slammed the tablet into Tony's chest. He then met my gaze. "Ultron killed Strucker."
Silence.
