Jake
Its almost been an hour now and these people have been staring at me and Daya.
Especially Captain America.
The dude's been quietly talking to that other woman since she got here. And I know the topic is about us. Why wouldn't it be.
"How long is this going to take?" Stark whined from where he stood.
God, you know I want to strangle him.
"That depends on the memory." I growled at him, and I was on the verge of fulfilling that "promise" with or without including Daya.
Captain America casted me a look after my answer and went back to silently chatting with that woman. His hushed gossips were starting to annoy me.
"If you got something to say, then say it to my face." I snapped from where I sat.
I watched him carefully as he finished off whatever he was saying, then turned toward me with a guarded expression.
"I was just telling Maria here that you and Daya will be needing rooms for the night. No need to be hostile." He retorted in a neutral tone.
I didn't believe what they said to me earlier, but I believe them now.
"Thanks."
"Your welcome." He replied shortly after me.
I turned back to Daya after he turned away first, then noticed her eyebrows were creasing. It's that same look of mangled fear she gets when this happens.
I placed my hand near her head and drifted off in my thoughts as I watched her rest.
I just wish that I can help her, just enough to ease my conscious about the same stupid thought that runs through my head.
She deserves better than me.
I do whatever it takes to keep her safe, yet we always manage to run into trouble.
Especially now that we're in neck deep with the Avengers. And have an evil organization right on our asses.
Every time I try to steer us clear of bad news, every time, we always ram right into it.
And I blame myself for that.
Suddenly I was no longer in the Tower by Daya. I was back at our old foster home reliving that day I always regretted. . .
"Come on Jake! She's going to catch us!" Daya let out a giggle of amusement.
"I'm coming!" I laughed back.
We just raided the candy stash in the kitchen of the Foster home for the third time this month, and now we finally got caught by Helen.
"You two delinquents! When I get my hands on you!" She screamed after us.
Helen is our "caretaker" but Daya and I nicknamed her "She Devil" because of her name and various attributes that match the description.
The stash was only meant for the good behaved children in the house that did the extra chores, or cleaned something that belonged to Helen, or just those that simply kissed up to her, but we were none of those children.
I ran right behind Daya with my arms overloaded with lollipops and chocolate liberated from Helens safe.
The woman goes the extra mile for security on candy, I give you that.
"You guys are going to be in so much trouble!" Stuart, the house know-it-all laughed cynically at us as we ran past his room.
"Shut up you sleaze!" Daya yelled back while reaching the front door of the house.
