There he was, tending to the horses like he did every afternoon

There he was, tending to the horses like he did every afternoon. I watched him groom my horse Shiloh as he pat her nose and laughed. "You're such a beauty aren't you Shiloh" he cooed. "So beautiful..." he trailed off. I peered out from behind the tree I gazed at him from, trying to get a better look at the beautiful peasant boy I had become so fixed on. "You know I can hear you back there your highness." At his words, I stumbled out of my hiding place.
"How did you know it was me?"
"I always know when the princess has graced me with her presence." He smiled cheekily.
"Cal, I told you not to call me that." I whispered as I took his hand. "Call me Y/N. It's my name, and I want to hear you say it." I took his head in my hands and tilted his chin down so that his deep brown eyes were looking into mine.
"Y/N, don't. You know why this can't work. You're the crowned princess, and I'm just the stable boy. We can't keep doing this."
"Calum, you know I don't care about that. I-I love you, and I want to be with you, not some arrogant prince who thinks he can buy my heart. I want you, Calum Hood, the boy who tends to the horses. Please, Cal just..." I was cut off by soft lips pressing against mine. His large hand gripped the back of my waist as he pulled me closer.
"Tell me you love me again" he whispered against my lips.
"Calum I love you."
"I love you too Y/N. I love you. I love you" he exclaimed, sealing each word with a kiss to my neck. Everything was perfect. I would give up my title for him, and we would run away together. I would renounce my crown and give it to my younger sister, and I would run away with Calum to the next kingdom, and we would start a life and....
Suddenly, I felt Calum's body being ripped away from me.
"Unhand the Princess you filthy peasant!" I opened my eyes to see Jacob, the chief of the guards and his two henchmen wrestling Calum to his knees with his hands tied behind his back. "No one is allowed to touch her like that!" Jacob screamed as he struck Calum over the head making a painful cracking sound.
"NO!" I screamed, rushing over to him. "Don't you dare touch him!" I shoved one of Jacob's men out of the way and dropped down beside Calum. "Cal, I'm so sorry" I whispered as I stroked his hair.
"Your highness we have to take him. We have him for assaulting royalty. The penalty could be death" Jacob's firm voice flowed into my ears. Death. No, he couldn't die. They couldn't take him away from me. I stood to my feet and looked Jacob in the eye.
"No, you will not touch him. Untie him right now. He has horses to look after." I tried to muster up all the strength I had ever been taught to have as a future Queen.
"Your highness, he assaulted you! We have to take him away."
"He did NOT assault me! I kissed him!" I yelled back. "Calum has done nothing wrong. It was my fault. I kissed him. He didn't even want me to. It's not his fault!" I rambled on as the tears began to fall. "Please, just don't hurt him. I-I love him." As soon as I said those words, Jacob's eyes turned hard.
"Men" Jacob commanded, his dark eyes still locked on mine. "Take this commoner to the dungeons where he will await execution" he said coldly. At this, I finally looked down to Calum, weak and broken on the ground all because he dared to love the Crowned Princess. He looked up at me with the same love filled expression that he had when we were kissing just moments earlier. His full lips formed the words "I love you" as Jacob and his men hauled him onto his feet and began to drag him away. "Jacob! Don't you dare do this...I-I'll have you thrown in there too!" I threatened. Jacob just looked at me with a cruel smirk.
"Sorry Princess, but I don't take orders from you. I take them from the King."
"Well then, I guess I'll just have to take this up with the King then" I spoke without emotion as I watched Jacob and his men drag Calum away, letting a single tear fall down my cheek and land on my gown.

"FATHER!" I stormed into the throne room where my father and mother usually sat doing their duties as the head of our kingdom. "Father, I-I, Jacob he...daddy he's done something awful!" I was full on crying at this point. My father had always been kind. To his subjects, he was the King, and he was a good king. To me, he was dad, and he always had been. And to him, I was his little girl, his Crowned Princess, and I planned to use that now to my advantage to save Calum.
"Honey, what is it? What has Jacob done?"
"He...he took an innocent boy, the stable boy to the dudgeon because...because I kissed him." I sniffed, heartbroken at the thought of Calum right now, down in the palace dungeon in chains and awaiting execution because I had the nerve to love him.
"Jacob did that?" the King asked.
"Yes father. I tried to stop him, but he wouldn't take orders from me" I choked through the tears.
The King stared at me for a few moments before he said "You know darling, Jacob has always had a soft spot for you, and he just wants to keep you safe."
"But father I..."
"You didn't let me finish. Why did you kiss this boy?"
"Because...Father I love him. I love him more than anything, and I know he's nothing but a stable hand, but he's so much more than that. He's kind and gentle and good, and he's smart and brave, and there isn't one person, not any prince or knight or lord anywhere who can compare to him."
"And does this boy love you back?" my father asked.
"You'd have to ask him father" I said quietly.
The throne room went silent as my father thought about my reply. Then, he motioned to the guard that stood by his side. "Go down to the dungeons and bring the boy to me. I want to see what he has to say about my daughter."
"Thank you father."
I waited in the throne room until I heard to doors to the grand hall open slowly to reveal Calum, bruised and bloody being dragged into the hall by Jacob and his men. I gasped at the sight of him.
"Calum!" I screamed as the guards threw him down in front of my father.
"Hey Princess" he whispered weakly.
"Calum is it? The stable boy. I believe you accompany me on my morning rides don't you?" my father asked. Calum looked up at him.
"Yes sir I do. You've got a fine horse. One of the finest I've seen your majesty" Calum explained.
"Calum, my daughter says she loves you. Do you return her feelings of love?"
I watched Calum pause for a moment, wondering what in the world was happening right now. But, he was sure of one thing. "Yes your majesty I do. I love her with all my heart" he told my father, but he was looking directly at me.
"Well that settles it then. You love her, and she loves you, why don't you two just get married?"
Calum and I looked at my father in disbelief.
"But, your Majesty, I'm not a prince! How can I marry her?"
"Calum Hood, I do not care about your title. A title does not give a man a good heart, and I want my daughter to be with a man who has a good heart. Calum, you are free to go. Somebody tend to this boy's wounds."
At this news, Calum grabbed my face and kissed me hard. "I love you. I love you, my beautiful princess, my darling, my bride I love you" he whispered into my ear as his hands lost themselves in my hair.
"I love you too Calum. I love you too."

3 years later

It had been two years since Calum's and my wedding. It was grand and beautiful and everyone in the whole kingdom attended. Jacob was serving time in the palace dungeons and had been demoted down to the new position of stable boy. Everything was perfect.
"Baby, are you ready for your coronation today?" Calum asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind and leaning his chin on my head.
"I don't know Cal, this just seems like such a big job, running a whole kingdom by myself. What if I can't do it like my father did?" I cast my eyes to the ground.
"Hey, hey look at me." He spun me around and took my face in his hands. "You are going to make a great Queen. You are powerful and kind and beautiful and elegant and everything a Queen should be. And I will be right by your side the whole time, okay?"
"Okay." I smiled as I pecked him on the lips. "Let's do this."

Five hours later and I was Queen. Calum and I lived long and happy lives as King and Queen, forever in love, like it was the first day I had seen him stroking those beautiful horses as the peasant stable boy all those years ago.
