(P/N) - Princess's name

(D/N) - Duchess's name

"(Y/N)..." Calum called from outside your window, but you pulled the bed sheet over your head and shut your eyes tight. You heard him throw a small pebble at your window and him calling your name again, but you refused to respond. You shut your eyes tight telling yourself to go back to sleep, and soon enough you drifted into darkness once more only to be woken up by your mother. "(Y/N), sweetheart you must wake up..." your mother says sitting at the end of your bed. "How long have I've been out?" you wondered. "Just an extra 30 minutes, not that long," she says, and you fell back into your pillow wanting to visit your dreams again. "He's waiting down there, he has been for a while. He refuses to go into the shop, he wants you to come to him..." "Why can't he just come upstairs...?" "I asked that, and he says it's because he's not the one running..." your mother says before standing up again. "You know, I only assumed how you must have felt towards the prince, but since that small visit and seeing your actions, it confirms everything, and I believe that the prince knows it as well...It's best to face him dear," your mother said before leaving. You stayed in bed for another minute before slowly getting out and dressing yourself. You ran your fingers through your hair to get rid of the bed head and saw his head out the window sitting on the bench in front of the shop. You let out a small breath and peaked outside. He looked at you and gave you a genuine smile and asked you to sit beside him. The two of you were silent and watched the people passing by, going on with their business as usual. "I was finally able to sneak out..." he says smiling sheepishly. "You couldn't get out because of your fiance?" you asked, and he looked away knowing that he had to answer the question. "It was a sudden decision by my parents...I'm the one in line for the crown since I am the first born son so.... It was bound to happen. I just never thought that it would happen so soon." "She seems like a wonderful princess," you said, and you felt Calum shift closer to you. "They are all the same, every noble born daughter and princess I have met are the same...All wonderful girls, but all are so one dimensional," he says, and you look down at your hands to play with your thumbs. "You should head back to the castle Calum, the security around you seems tight, and if they found that you snuck out, then..." "So? Let them find me. I've been sneaking out since I was 13, risking every escape just to see you for 6 years. What is one day going to change?" he says, and you looked at him feeling the blush in your cheeks and your heart beating fast. You were aware of him visiting you all these years, but hearing him point it out made it seem ridiculous. "W-why?" you asked. "Why what?" "For all these years, since we were 13, why did you go through all the trouble to visit me. Traveling from the castle all the way to the far end of the village to this small bakery...Risking yourself from the guards and from being found out by all the other villagers of who you really are...I didn't ask you to do this, I never asked you to put yourself on the line like this," you said pouring out all your frustrations. "I know you didn't ask for it. I did this for myself. I visited you because I wanted to see you," he says simply, and you were scared to press any further, only imagining what he would say next if you did. "You aren't going to ask why I want to see you?"  he questioned, and you shook your head, "I don't want to know." "I'm going to tell you, it's because I-" he says, but you stood up and took off running. You cut streets and passed people without giving a second thought if you were going to crash into someone. You eventually did, and it was the owner of the flower shop, flowers that she carried in a huge basket flew up into the air and to the ground, and you snapped out of your panic to help her and apologize several times. You thought to finally stop running but remembered the conversation you had with her husband, the owner of the shop across from hers. The conversation about the old woman who made love assumptions that were never wrong. You went off running again before the owner could ask if you were okay and continued to run to forget about these feelings, the recent conversation, the engagement, and about Calum. You stopped at an empty ally and leaned against the brick wall before sliding down into a squat. You wouldn't escape; you couldn't just simply run from those feelings. "It feels unreal, this is not right..." you said to yourself. "This is unrealistic, a prince doesn't just simply fall for a peasant like me," you said while thinking about those stories that your mother used to tell you when you were young. Stories like Cinderella where she lived an unfortunate, yet average, peasant life and attended one night to a ball and dancing with the prince who immediately fell in love with her. "Why would he even like someone like me?" you asked yourself and heard footsteps stopping in front of you. "Who wouldn't?" Calum asked who looked just as tired chasing after you. He helped you up and leaned against you tiredly. "Just hear me out...and when I finish, you can kindly reject me if you want...Just know that I am in love with you..." he says pulling away to look at you face to face. "Being with you makes me feel like I could be like any other 18 year old in the kingdom, you make me forget my responsibilities, and you don't let me get away with everything..." he says before taking the flower petals off your head from when you crashed into the owner. "Listen...It was never my idea to get engaged...For the past few days, it has made me feel sick to wear such a mask and act a certain way just for the sake of this arranged marriage...If I could choose my own princess, it would be you, I would want you by my side..." he says stroking your cheek with his thumb and looking at you with a tinted blush on his face. "That's all I have to say...You can reject me at any time," he says before dropping his hands. He was stepping back to create distance, but you pulled him back towards you and rested your head against his chest. "Why wasn't I born a royal?" you wondered with tears starting to form. "Being royal isn't anything special, if anything, why wasn't I born a peasant?" he asked and tilted your chin up to kiss you. You felt his arms hold you by the waist and yours wrapping around his neck. The hat he had on his head for his disguise fell to the ground, and you took a moment to admire Claum for who he was, not a prince, but as the person you've known for 6 long years. The two of you exchanged careless kisses feeling like there was nothing to hide or hold back anymore, but this fairy tale was too good to be true. Two royal guards were running toward you, and at the end of the ally, two more were approaching. "Prince Calum, you must head back to the castle, your parents are furious." "The princess is waiting for you." "Who is this peasant girl?" another asks before grabbing you. "Let go of her," Calum says before pushing you behind him. "Prince, she must be taken to the castle." "What? Why?" you questioned. "This conspiracy must be addressed to the royal family." "Just let her go home," Calum begged, but the two of you were pushed and headed towards a waiting carriage.
