The royal family was planning a ball to celebrate the engagement of Prince Jack and Princess Celeste. You were given the job of guarding near the ballroom doors and checking all the guests before they could go in. When you were young, you always imagined how a royal ball would be like, but at that time, your training was most important. You remembered the earlier days when you started your duty to protect Luke. There would be a few events like this, but you stayed with the older guards around the perimeter on those nights, then retired early to escort Luke back to his room for the night. As the two of you grow older, your position of guard would always change, and Luke's curfew started to get later in the night. This year he had to attend the ball to the very end. You were heading to your post but were stopped by Luke half way. "(Y/N)," he called out. "Yes your majesty?" "I was told that your post this year is near the ballroom entrance? Thank goodness, I'll be able to talk to you the whole time to keep myself up," he says happily. You chuckled slightly. "Your majesty, you can't do that," you said. "Why not?" "I'll be on duty, I can't interact with any of the guests when I'm on the job. You have a job too, you have to interact with your guests, dance with a few girls, and keep everyone entertained," you said. "(Y/N), you know I'm shy, I can't just talk to people so easily," he says. "Prince Luke, when you are king and take over your father's throne you are going to have to be social and speak to big crowds and make speeches...It's your duty," you pointed out. He still continued to look uneasy, and you chuckled. "I'll be in your sight the whole time, it should be fine that way right? If I'm at least near you," you said. Luke smiles and nods his head slightly. You stood at your post, and Luke took his time before leaving. You straighten out his outfit and moved a stray hair before letting him join his family on the thrones. When the time came, families made their way through you then into the ballroom. King Andy made his announcements and held his glass high, making everyone cheer. The party started early with the alcoholic drinks and music started to echo through the ballroom. Prince Jack took the opportunity to be the first couple on the floor to dance, and everyone started to join soon after. You felt a body inch closer to you nervously, "Prince Luke, go ask someone to dance with you," you said. "Who would I even ask?" he says feeling slightly flustered. "I don't know, there are a lot of fine and young noble women in this room, choose someone," you encouraged. "Can I ask you?" he asks sheepishly. Your heart started to flutter, but you shook off the feeling. "I don't count, besides, I am not wearing a dress, I cannot dance in my armor," you said. "So if you wore a dress, would you dance with me?" he wondered, and you glanced at him trying to process his words. "Prince Luke, a knight cannot attend the ball and it's festivities. It doesn't work that way. Please, don't spend your night glued beside me, have fun on this night, celebrate for the prince, for your brother," you said, and Luke took a moment to think. He gave out a sigh and took a step forward. You saw him slowly trail off to a girl who was on the side and saw him offer his hand to dance with her. "That is amazing (Y/N)..." The guard next to you said. "What is?" "Well, for as long as I've known you and the prince as my duty as a guard and knight, I notice that Prince Luke only seems to listen to your reason. I heard when he was young, he was either a timid kid or a rebellious one. Sometimes he wouldn't listen to anyone which caused the servants to chase after him and figure out ways to trick him into doing what he was supposed to." "That doesn't sound like him at all," you said trying to imagine it. "Well, when he talks to you, no matter how many times he whines to try to trick you, you would never fall for it and never give in," he says. "Well...My father raised me to where I shouldn't find the easy way out and always be assertive. When I was assigned to protect the prince, I guess I started to apply my morals to him," you said watching him dance with one of the guests and apologize for accidentally stepping on her foot. "(Y/N)?" the guard calls out again, and you chuckle. "We are supposed to be keeping guard not chatting," you say to him. "I know, but, don't you wish you were attending this ball? Not as a knight, but as a maiden," he says. "I do not understand," you answered. "Well, every girl dreams to attend a ball and wear a fancy dress...Don't you feel that way?" he asks. You hesitated, unsure of how to answer. "I mean, you train hard every day, you are dedicated to your duties, you are always in armor or covered in sweat or dirt. You may be used to those things, but don't you want to be a princess for a night?" he asks, and you let his words sink in. The thought of you changing out of your armor and getting all dressed up seemed like the best vacation to you. One night of not having to be alert and cautious, one night to not wear heavy metal and stand on guard for hours. "I-I guess, it would be nice...to be a lady for one night," you mumbled and looked up. "It's just not tonight," you said before focusing again. Through out the night, you have escorted guests who left early or who were too drunk and needed to leave. A fellow guard visited you at your post. "Yes sir?" you saluted. "(Y/N), I'll be taking your shift from here on out. It is new orders," he says. "E-Excuse me? I can keep going, I can still stand guard," you said thinking it was something you did wrong. "I'm sorry (Y/N), you have new orders to take." "From who? The leader?" you questioned. "Nope, from me," Luke says peering down from behind you. "Your majesty?" you said slightly confused. "I order you to change out of your armor and let the servants prepare you to attend this ball," he says carelessly. "This is preposterous," you said. "It's a royal order...Besides, I couldn't help but overhear your conversation when I was poorly waltzing around," he says grinning. You stared at him for a long moment trying to figure out if he was serious on his word. Luke didn't budge, and you gave up your post to fill his request. The servants admired your looks and figure as they helped you get ready. You saw yourself transform into pure elegance with just a simple dress and hair preparations. "You are very beautiful (Y/N)," the servant says. "T-Thank you," you mumbled. "You look like a completely different person, such a lady," another coos before opening the door and waiting for you to be escorted back to the ballroom. You took a good look at yourself in the mirror, a little in awe of what you have become. You went back to the party passing the guards who seemed in awe as you passed by. Heads seemed to turn as you passed them, and you found yourself in the middle of the dance floor. Men around you seemed hesitant to ask you to dance, but Luke stole the chance away. "May I have this dance?" he questions. "Is that an order Prince Luke?" you wondered. He didn't answer and took your hand in his. You could feel him slightly trembling, but his face didn't show it, or maybe it was you who was trembling. Luke would step on your foot once in a while and apologize right away. If he did, you would smile and tell him you didn't feel a thing. "Thank you for this opportunity your majesty," you said in a hushed tone. He twirled you and took you in his arms once more to continue the dance. "As expected...I dance better when I'm with you (Y/N)," he said before twirling you again to the beat of the music. The guards and servants stare at the two of you in awe. "Is she allowed to do that?" the guard asks. Both him and the two servants shrugged again and continued their business as usual.
