Oh how wrong you had been to believe Luke when he said that the two of you would be together for the rest of your lives.

It was far from that.
After Queen Elizabeth's party to seek a princess for her son to marry, you lost him.
You lost him to the one thing he always told you that you wouldn't lose him to.
He had found himself a princess.
Do you want to know what the worst part was?
She was a complete sweetheart. A total opposite to those cliché love stories that you read so often about the girl being a complete bitch. So you couldn't find it in yourself to hate her. She was beyond beautiful which was why you could see why he had chosen her. She was also a princess, something you could never be.
You laid on your bed in the room you shared with Bryana since maids - or any servant for that matter - had to have a roommate as you remembered the last few words he had said to you.
"I know that I always said that it would be you and me, but I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen, but it did. I found a princess, Y/N, and we're getting married in six months time."
It broke you to know that he no longer loved you like how you loved him. That four years of being together was all that you would have with him.
And you knew it too.
You knew from the very beginning that he would find someone else, someone much more worthy of him, and you couldn't even be mad at the fact that he did. You were mad at the fact that you had given him your heart, your entire being, when you knew that you would someday be left in the dust; nothing but a faint memory with nobody to blame but yourself.
Tomorrow was their wedding day, and you didn't think you could sit around and watch. It had been enough torture helping out with the planning.
You had packed yourself a small bag filled with just your basic necessities and quietly made your way out into the empty corridor.
You snuck your way around the palace and to the kitchen where there was a back door you could escape from to get to the sheds where the horses were kept. You planned on leaving before anyone could notice your absence.
You had made it halfway across the kitchen when a light came on.
You froze and turned to see Luke at the island with a snack in front of him, staring at you in confusion and...hurt?
No, he wasn't allowed to be hurting when your heart had been ripped out a long time ago.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asked you as he took in your appearance.
You gulped and looked down at your boots. "No where."
He narrowed his eyes at you. "Don't lie to me, Y/N. Were you about to sneak out?"
You looked away and nodded.
You heard his intake of breath. "Why?"
You closed your eyes to prevent any tears from falling. "I can't be around you."
You heard some shuffling, and soon your chin was being grasped softly between his thumb and forefinger as he turned your head to face him. You opened your eyes and met Luke's saddened blue ones.
"Why can't you be around me?" he croaked.
Tears gathered into your eyes. "It's not exactly a pleasant thing to watch the love of your life marry someone else, Luke."
He bit his bottom lip as he struggled to say what he had to say. "Y/N, I'm getting married tomorrow. What we had...you need to forget about it."
Hearing him say those words was like another stab to your already shattered heart. "I can only do that if I leave."
He gave you a pleading look. "You can't leave, Y/N. We may not be together, but that doesn't mean that I've stopped caring about you."
You let out a pity laugh. "I'm just a maid, Luke. You shouldn't care about me at all." You pulled away from him and ran out the door into the night, never looking back.

Prince Luke calls it quits!
Prince leaves Princess at the altar.
Prince Luke says he can't marry her.
Prince Luke says he's in love with someone else.

Those were only a few of the headlines you read from the newspapers a few days after you left Luke that night.
"Babe, he's not doing so well," Calum told you as he poured you a cup of tea.
You looked away from the newspaper and added some milk and sugar. "Why would he call if off though? I thought he loved her?"
Calum sat down at the table beside you. "He never really did tell you the full reason on why he said yes to marrying her, did he?"
You raised an eyebrow as you took a sip of your tea. "What reason? All he told me was that he had found himself a princess and that they were getting married in six months."
Calum gave you a look. "He didn't say that he didn't love you." He sighed. "It's really not my place to tell, but I think you have a right to know."
You placed your cup down and gave him your full attention. "Talk."
He rubbed a hand over his face. "Okay, so you know how Liz had that party right? Well, one of the servants had told her about you and Luke. She confronted him about this, and when he confirmed it, she refused to have him date a maid," he made quotation marks around the word, "so she gave him a choice. Well, more like an ultimatum. He could marry a princess and you wouldn't be affected in any way or..." He gave you a sad look, "You were to be killed the following morning."
Your hand flew up to cover your mouth as you gasped in shock. "What?"
He nodded. "She didn't approve of him dating someone of a lower status so she sought to rid herself of the main cause of the problem." He looked you in the eyes. "You." He then looked at both of your cups of tea. "Of course, Luke wouldn't have you killed so he chose to marry her, but obviously seeing you leave him made him realize that he was losing you either way. So he didn't end up marrying her."
You sat there in silence as you took in all the new found information and also because you didn't know what to say. Finally, you looked up at Calum. "Why didn't he just tell me?" Your voice cracked as you held back a sob.
"Because I'd rather be unhappy for the rest of my life than watch you die," a voice said from behind you.
You turned around, startled in your seat, as you took in the sight of Luke.
He looked as if he hadn't gotten any sleep. His clothes were wrinkled, he had a lot of stubble on his face, and there were prominent dark circles under his eyes.
"I'll let you guys talk..." Calum murmured as he silently slipped out of the room.
You stood up, and he walked towards you until he was stood a few feet away from where you were stood, rooted in place.
"Why?" you breathed out in a whisper. His eyebrows furrowed at your question. "Why didn't you tell me, Luke? Why didn't you say anything?" Your voice wavered.
"Do you think it's easy telling the person you're in love with that if you didn't stop seeing them, they would die?!" he tells you exasperated.
You looked away. "I would have had a better understanding as to why you would leave me..." You turned your head sharply to look him in the eye. "I told you, Luke! I told you from the very start that all I would do is cause you trouble, and that has just been proven. I told you that you would find a princess one day to marry and that you shouldn't have wasted your time with a maid like me. I'm worthless, Luke."
He took two steps towards you and grasped your face in his hands. "You are not worthless, Y/N. I will always tell you that because I will always think that of you. You have been my last since the first day and will always will be. I'll never love another soul. It's just you, baby." He wiped away a tear that had fallen down your cheek.
"But what about your mom? Your dad? The kingdom? They need a ruler, Luke."
Luke scoffed. "Well, they can find someone else because I don't want to rule over this kingdom without you at my side as my beloved queen."
"You can't have it both ways, Luke. You'll have to make a decision."
"Then we'll run away. We'll be like long, lost children running to the edge of the world."
Your eyes widened. He couldn't be serious. "You can't be serious."
"I'm being completely serious right now. Let's run away. Everyone wants to throw us away, so why not? This is our chance to safety pin the pieces of our broken hearts back together."
"And where will we go? What would we do for food, shelter, and other necessities?"
"Mike, Ash, and I got this little cottage thing in between all four of our kingdoms, hidden from view, for the two of you," Calum's voice was heard.
You two turned and saw him standing in the middle of the doorway.
"We figured Luke would come to his senses eventually so we went to find a little hideaway for the two of you. It's stocked up, has electricity, indoor plumbing, and the three of us can always help out when you need it," Calum told you guys.
You two smiled at each other before tackling Calum in a hug.
"You're a life saver, man," Luke told him.
"It took you forever to realize that you were being an idiot though," Calum pointed out.
Luke rolled his eyes and shoved him. He turned to you. "When should we leave?"
"I reckon right now. I'm sure your parents have sent guards out to look for the two of you," Calum said.
You looked at Luke and nodded. "Alright."
He held his hand out to you. "Together?"
You took it. "Together."
Calum led you through a secret entrance, and the two of you escaped out into the night.

"Well, at least it looks cozy," Luke told you as the the two of you stood in front of the cottage several hours later.
You leaned into his side. "It does. I like it."
He smiled down at you. "Welcome to the new broken scene, baby, where you and I are the King and Queen." He kissed you.
