5 Years Later Perspective

Calum always visited the village in disguise, but it was the first time you saw him visit as a prince. The girls would fawn over him and gather to see what he was up to. As a part of Calum's royal training, he had to observe every part of the kingdom and their jobs. He had to know where the money flowed, and what problems they currently had going on in the village, and how the system worked from outside the castle. You were setting bread out to cool and saw Calum walk pass with guards by his side. You gave a small wave, but he didn't acknowledge it. You assumed he didn't see you and tried to brush it off but seeing this side of Calum was unknown to you. You have known Calum personally in secret for 5 years, and seeing this prince side of him was just unnatural to you. Calum didn't smile, he had a cold expression, and he looked like he was playing a role of a typical prince rather than being himself. When it was late at night, your father sent you along with the other villagers to bring food to the prince and guards who camped out to resume teaching the next day. You made a plate with food and approached Calum. "Your majesty," you said before placing the plate in front of him. You snuck a slice of his favorite marble cake and gave him a small smile. He looked at you and silently thanked you with his expression before eating. Calum stayed in the village for about a week, and this cycle continued every night when they had dinner. The guards around Calum were very strict, no one was allowed to be around him very long, and sometimes you weren't even allowed to speak to him. Was being a prince always like this? Since you were young, you would look at the castle with envy, thinking you wouldn't have a care in the world if you were royal. You didn't think it would leave you feeling so caged. You fell asleep with your window slightly open, you stared at the castle till sleep took you over but woke up when a pebble was thrown into your room. Your eyes fluttered open, and you looked out to see Calum wearing a cloak as his disguise with a hopeful expression on his face. You grabbed a blanket to warm yourself up and quietly went downstairs to let him in. He rushed in to hug you and let this moment set in, "Do you still have any more of that marble loaf?" he asks with a needy expression. "Midnight snack?" you wondered, and he smiled at you sheepishly. You led him inside the kitchen and took out the left overs for him to eat. You liked seeing this side of Calum, the prince that smiled and gave you goofy expressions. He would sip the milk you poured in a cup to go with his cake, and he took a moment of silence, "I'm sorry I couldn't talk to you (Y/N)..." he says with a guilty expression. "It isn't your fault, you're a prince, you have responsibilities to do you know," you said while tracing patters on the table. "I don't really want to be a prince though, not if I have to be acting like a statue the whole time. When I first met you, you always asked me questions about the castle. They are all true, it is luxurious in ways, but when it comes to responsibility, it just isn't fun anymore, it becomes strict and suffocating," he says before finishing his food. "So you don't want to be a king?" you asked. "I do, but when I'm king, I don't want to be expressionless, I want to act how a king should act...I want to act the way I am with you," he says before looking up. "You will be a wonderful king, you just need to persevere," you said before taking his plate to be washed. "(Y/N), I'm sorry to disturb you so late at night. Thank you for this, I'll take my leave now-" he says standing up but hearing a crash at the front of the store. The both of you went outside to see the guards filing in one by one. "Prince Calum, you are safe thank goodness," one guard says grabbing him. The guards start trashing the place causing your parents to rush down confused. "You, how dare the both of you kidnap the prince! We have ways of dealing with people like you," another guard says. You try to stop them and explain, but they wouldn't listen. Calum catches their attention, and the guards drop what they are doing and look at him. "Sire?" a guard asks. "I left on my own. These kind people have done nothing but spare some food for my late night cravings. (Y/N) and her family here are now under my protection. I demand that this bakery receive repairs complimentary of the royal family," Calum demands, and the guards apologize before exiting out of the bakery. Calum looks at you with a sorry expression. "Thank you," you said giving him a reassuring smile. "I'll take care of this, I promise," he says again before leaving. Later in the week, the bakery was repaired and was built bigger than ever. Calum visited again in his peasant clothes to buy some of the marbled cake again. "Like the repairs?" he asks while eating. "My parents are still awestruck...Thank you for taking responsibility," you said. "When I'm king, I'll give you the title of the royal baker," he says grinning. "I'd like that very much Prince Calum," you said smiling.
