(P/N) - Princess's name
(D/N) - Duchess's name
"(Y/N), are you okay?" Luke asked you after working out in the morning. "I am fine Prince, why the sudden question?" you wondered. "As of lately, you've been too serious. If you keep that serious expression on your face, you will get wrinkles," he jokes and gives you a light tap on your forehead. You turned away from his touch. "Please refrain from doing that Prince Luke," you said. "Why? You didn't mind it before," he says. "Yes but...It's different now," you said before standing up and getting ready to escort him in time for his morning classes. "(Y/N)?" he called out. "Yes Prince Luke?" "Everything is changing, the way I'm being treated...My life...everything is changing, and I don't think I can keep up..." "Well, you are an engaged man after all. You will have kids and take the throne. It is a lot of adjusting to do," you said. "I know...But will you...Will you still be by my side?" he asks, and your heart started to beat harder against your chest. "Always your majesty," you said trying to conceal your feelings. In the afternoon, you waited for Luke's lessons to finish as usual. You spotted the Princess down the hall walking towards the room and stopped when she saw you. "(Y/N), good afternoon," she greets. "Good afternoon Princess (P/N). I am sorry, but if you plan to visit the prince, it will have to wait. His teachers are quite strict and do not like interruptions," you said. "But I'm his fiance," she says. "I understand that, but there are no exceptions," you said, and she sighed before leaning against the wall and waiting with you. "I apologize, it's just...I am trying my best to get the prince to notice me," she admits, and you decided to hear her out. "You love the prince? Or well, of course you do, you are engaged," you said. "We are complete strangers, but I don't want it to be that way. I want to be close to him," she says, and you nodded to reassure that you were listening. "Well enough about me, let's talk about you." "Please, let's not, I am not one to talk about," you said being modest. "Yes you are, you are well known from other kingdoms. You are the Prince's personal guard and a woman out of all people. There has never been a female knight since...Joan of Arc," she says, and you gave a half smile. "You must know a lot about him...The prince that is," she says, and you shrugged. "He isn't that hard to figure out," you said. "Oh please help me (Y/N), please help me get close to him," she begged, and you felt cornered. You didn't want to hesitate to be suspicious, so you gave in to this agreement. The plan was simple and that was to leave the two of them alone. When Luke ended his classes, you made an excuse that you had to sharpen your weapons today, and as much as Luke wanted to follow, you convinced him that it would be dangerous for him to stick around in a warehouse full of pointy objects. This routine continued. In the mornings, the princess would get up early to convince Luke to have breakfast with her and you needed to train alone. In the afternoon, you had an important meeting with other guards and Luke again spent time with the princess in the garden. At dinner, you ended your shift early due to your mother needing help for dinner, then the cycle continued. Again in the afternoon, you guarded the door to Luke's class, and the princess showed an unsatisfied look. "There is no progress in your relationship?" you wondered. "None at all...In truth, I feel irritated," she admits. "Why is that?" "Because all he talks about is you," she says, and your eyes widen slightly. "M-Me?" you stuttered. "Yep, he would tell me about how he first met you, and why you train with him in the mornings, and the time you snuck out of the village...I'm jealous (Y/N). When he talks about you, he smiles a lot...And I want to believe I can do that too," she says with a hurt expression. "You can, he just...Prince Luke is oblivious, but he is kind, and I know he will grow to love you. Maybe he is just shy to get into other topics, and if that is the case, you have to be patient with him and wait until he is ready to get personal with you. So please, don't let your feelings falter," you said, and she stared at you blankly. "It's funny...When you talk about the prince, you have the same look as him..." she pointed out, and you averted your eyes. "(Y/N), do you have feelings for the prince? I know it's a wild question, but...Do you carry such feelings?" she asks while keeping eye contact. "No, I do not," you insisted. " Are you sure about that?" "I am sure...Our relation is strictly business, it's not that I chose to protect him, I have to, it's my duty...I spend every moment with him not by choice, but it is my order," you said, and the door opened. Luke stepped out, and you tensed knowing that he heard every word you said out of impulse and pressure. The words that came out of your mouth were not worded correctly, but it was too late to explain to Luke. "Are you done with your studies Prince Luke?" the princess asked. "Yes, uh...You wanted to stroll the garden today right?" "Oh you remembered, yes I do want to visit the garden," she says, and the both of them began to walk. Before you could follow, Luke looked back, "(Y/N), you can take the time off. It's just the garden here in the castle. You can continue with your afternoon training that you have to do," he says and turns back to the princess. "As you wish..." You said with your words fading. You did spend your afternoon training, sparring with a fellow guard, and getting your butt kicked badly. "(Y/N), are you even trying?" "Sigh...No, honestly I'm not," you said with Luke clouding your head. "Call it a day, we've been at it since Lunch, and now it's sun set. I have to get ready for my post," he says, and you nodded. "Shouldn't you be caring for the prince?" he asks. "He doesn't need me," you admitted. The guard was about to question but realized his time was running short. He apologized for not being able to stay longer and rushed to his post. You staggered to the bench and drank all the water you brought with you. When it fell empty, you put the cup down on the ground to leave you space to lay down on the bench. You took this moment to yourself and wished to take back the words you said in the hall. Your statement was false, and you wished Luke didn't hear such words. You heard footsteps approaching you and saw Luke with his arms crossed and a serious expression on his face. "Your majesty, it's getting late, you should be heading to the dining table at this time," you said sitting up. "I'm not really hungry, I'm more interested on what is going on in your head," he says before sitting beside you. "What you said before, I know you didn't mean it...right?" "Of course not prince, I promised to be by your side, I was just...compromised," you said and looked away. "Why did you say it?" "The princess was concerned so...I just...I said that to reassure her." "Reassure her on what?" he asked, and you refused to say it. "That you don't have feelings for me?" he guessed, and you clenched your fist. "She asked me the same question, about how I feel about you..." "And how did you answer?" you asked. "I told her not to worry about it," he says, and you feel disappointed by the answer. "I said that because if she really knew how I felt, you would get in trouble as well," he continued, and you glanced at him. "(Y/N) I-" "Please, don't say it," you blurted out, and he stopped. "Do you know what I'm going to say?" "Yes I do, and I don't want to hear it...I shouldn't hear such things. Everything about this, about us, it is not allowed, it goes against the code, against everything," you said feeling frustrated and at war with your feelings. "If I wasn't a knight then...I wouldn't feel so conflicted between my duty as a lady and my duty as a knight..." "But if you weren't a knight, then you would have never been by my side," he says before letting you face him. "Even though you gave up your duties given to you at birth for a life of knighthood, I still look at you as a girl. Even if you are covered in dirt and always on guard, I still see you as someone elegant and beautiful that can compete even with a princess," he says before tucking your hair behind your ear. "Why are you saying such flattering things...?" you asked feeling the blush on your cheeks grow brighter. "Because I like you (Y/N), and I am serious about you being by my side, don't stray from me anymore on some plan the Princess thought up...She can't win my heart, she never could, and that is because it's always been with you..." he admitted with his face growing just as bright. He covers his face and holds your hand. "Age 18 and I still haven't grown out of telling you such cheesy confessions," he says, and you smile and chuckle at him. He looks at you and smiles fondly looking at your eyes then down to your lips. He inched closer to you, and your eyes began to close but were interrupted by Luke's name being called. The princess stood there with a shocked expression. She looked at you feeling hurt. "Liar," she uttered before running back towards the castle. Luke knew that she was going to tell and ran after her to try and convince her to keep quiet. In that split moment, you were aware of the consequences and the situation you put yourself into.
