Cynthia Duncan

I spent my summer vacation of two months inside the confines of my parents hospital.

They had agreed with me on my decisions but they'd wanted me to run some tests and stay at the hospital until I got better.

Haley and Julie came to see me during the last days leading to start of school again.

I felt myself grow weaker and weaker. The everyday tasks I usually did before felt daunting and strenuous now.

My parents and I were driving home when I stopped them on the way.

It had been two months of just gobbling down hospital food and I wanted to have an Oreo Frappuccinos from Starbucks.

I quickly got out of the car to get myself an Oreo Frappuccinos but when I came out, I was greeted with my worst nightmare.

Standing outside Starbucks with their own drinks in their hands were Stacy Underwood, Cyrus Lindow, Mike Stiller and his group of friends.

It looked like Cyrus and Stacy had come on a date but Mike and his friends had decided to interrupt their date.

Mike was the first to see me and his eyes widened in shock and recognition.

I quickly turned away from his gaze, self conscious as I was still in my hospital gown, and feebly took some steps towards the parking lot before I was blocked by Mike and his group of friends on their motorcycles.

I tried going the other way but Mike and his group of friends caught up to me.

Stacy and Cyrus had also come to watch the play.

"Nice to see our school's young grandma over here!" said Mike eyeing me up and down in my hospital gown.

"Jeez! What's with the dress?" said Stacy coming forward to pull at my hospital gown.

But I was quicker.

I grabbed her hand which was holding my hospital gown and tightened my grip around her wrist.

"Leave me alone!" I whispered.

I continued tightening my grip on her hand until she let go of my dress crying out in pain.

She held her bruised wrist close to her chest and started to whine like a baby.

"Oh! Look what she did to me!" said Stacy showing her red and bruised arm to Mike and Cyrus.

Mike looked angry for some reason I didn't know.

And he was directing his anger towards me.

Cyrus looked at Stacy's hand and then at me but I quickly raised my eyebrows in question when he tried stepping towards me.

He stopped.

But before I could warn Cyrus, Mike's younger brother, Hunter Stiller who went to middle school here in town intervened.

"What's up with her hair?" asked Hunter looking at his brother and pointing at my hair which I had unfortunately, decided to not tie it up.

Hunter chuckled a little and said, "It's really like what you were telling me Mike."

"Did you color it because you wanted to look different?" asked Hunter stepping closer to examine me.

I stood there doing nothing.

"No. She was born like that," answered Mike.

"Who thought of the name young grandma for her?" said Hunter pointing and laughing at me.
