Once we returned to the base, Phil, Jeffrey, Talbot, and I were in Jeffrey's office, who had a crutch he was leaning on, which helped him to stand. Phil and I were in a heated argument with Talbot.
"Really, Glenn?" Phil asked in disbelief.
"You should be thanking me. We're in the middle of an arms race." Talbot rebuked. "World War III is gonna be decided by whoever has more enhanced assets. You need Inhumans to trust S.H.I.E.L.D."
I raised an eyebrow. "And were planning to earn their trust by lying to them?"
"If you'd consulted me, I probably would have advised against that." Phil protested.
"Which is exactly why I didn't." Talbot retorted.
"Keep digging that hole, see how that works out for you." Phil shot back.
"You needed a face for your poster. Fine. Your girl Daisy went rogue..." Talbot replied before looking over at me. "And you. I had you in mind, but then I discovered you were gone..."
My eyes widened. What? Me lead S.H.I.E.L.D.? But I'm not even from this galaxy.
"I took a vacation back home with my friends. In case you've forgotten my home is Corellia...not Earth." I reminded him.
Talbot nodded. "Yeah...believe me I know, however you've become quite popular on Earth. Many people look up to you, Storm, yet you don't even realize that. It would've worked in our favor to have an alien who's a friend to be the head of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Do you realize how many inhumans would trust us? But you sure seem to disappear very often. So I had to search for someone else..." Talbot explained. "The President tasked me with finding the next Captain America. Not an easy job, but I did it. I delivered a patriot... A bona fide American hero! That man could have done anything after Vienna."
"General? Could we have the room, please?" Jeffrey asked, speaking up.
Talbot was taken back. "What? You're taking their side? After everything we've done for you?"
Jeffrey gave him a pleading look. "Please."
Talbot glared at Phil before storming off, muttering to himself. After Talbot was out of the room, Jeffrey spoke again. "After the explosion, everything was... chaos. People were screaming. I had smoke in my eyes. I wanted to get to safety. And... I tripped. I didn't even know she was there. Someone snapped a picture."
Jeffrey then handed us the famous picture of him saving a woman at the bombing in Vienna.
"So you just went with it." Phil answered, finishing his story.
Jeffrey sighed. "I tried to deflect. Everyone thought I was being modest. But they were treating me like the man I always wanted to be. Few months later, Talbot came to me with an offer. I thought I could be the face to end Inhuman prejudice."
"And you wanted to help." I added.
Jeffrey nodded. "I thought I could. I believe...that Inhumans deserve the same rights as anyone else in this country. I'll call a press conference...resign...reinstate you as Director."
As Jeffrey began to walk out of his office, Phil and I exchanged a look. Looks like Jeffrey wasn't a bad person after all. He just wanted to help. Jeffrey's truly a good person, which is why he should stay as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. With that Phil and I both nodded before turning back to look at the Jeffrey.
"You're not going anywhere." Phil said as he placed the picture on the desk.
Jeffrey froze before turning towards us. "Excuse me?"
