Catching Sleep

I am lying-
Lying on my back
Eyes wide open
Staring at a blue ceiling-
Lying to you
Saying I'm asleep
Because I want to be.
Sleep...
Oh Sleep alludes me
Because I used to chase him,
But once I caught him
And found some time,
He ran away from me.
Maybe he doesn't like
Being used
In the awful ways
I use him:
To run away,
To escape,
To sample a taste of freedom.
Oh, Sleep, I'm sorry,
Did we meet too long
For you to come again?
What do I do
With nothing to do
To save me from myself?
My mind is wandering...
Wandering farther and farther
Out of my reach
Until it grows into something else,
And you could help...
Oh, Sleep, I miss you too.
You notice
So much
When the world
Is frozen
In the realm
Of waiting for sleep.
I see color differently,
Feel my skin differently,
Taste my tongue differently
Than I did awake,
But now I'm waiting
In Sleep's waiting room...
I tried to make an appointment,
But he prefers walk-ins...
I suspect he's left me
For good-
Goodnight?
