I kissed Draco goodbye as he went to the Slytherin common room to unpack. Ron and I walked off to our common room.
"I just don't know how to help her, like is it actually exam stress or is it because of, you know, what happened in the holidays" Ron said pushing the door of our room open.
"I'm not entirely sure, but no matter what's causing her stress, you need to do what you do best; comfort her" I said opening my trunk that the house-elves had brought to my room.
We both only had a few minutes before we needed to go to the great hall for dinner.
"I just feel like she's been so unreachable lately" Ron said sitting on his bed. I went and sat next to him.
"She will reach out when she's ready and able to" I said trying to comfort Ron.
"How do you and Draco do it? Yes you guys have your ups and downs, but you've never even thought of breaking up with him, not once" Ron said lifting his head to look at me.
"I just know that whatever I'm going through, it would be ten times worse without him" I said touched by Ron's comment.
"I just feel like I don't understand her, you and Draco can just be totally vulnerable with each other, you get one another. I want to talk to Hermione, but she doesn't open herself up to me. I can feel it" Ron said resting his head in his hands.
"Often when people don't open up, it's because they're scared of getting hurt" I said rubbing Ron's back.
"I would never hurt Hermione" Ron said taking a shuddering breath.
"I know that, but you need to make sure she knows that" I said standing up,
"Come on let's go to dinner."
"Alright" Ron sighed.
When we reached the great hall Draco was sitting at the Slytherin table. You had to sit with your house at the first and last meals of the term. He was sitting next to Pansy who didn't look very happy at all. He looked at the people he was surrounded by and rolled his eyes. I gave a little laugh and sat down next to Ron. Dean and Seamus were sitting opposite us. Dean gave me a smile before we all turned to face the teachers' table.
Dumbledore was standing at his podium, which was moulded to look like a gold owl. He cleared his throat before saying,
"I would like to welcome you all back to a new term at Hogwarts, may it be filled with laughter and learning. I won't go on anymore as I'm sure you can't wait to tuck into this delicious feast." As he finished speaking he gestured with his arm and food appeared on the tables. The first years gasped as they had only seen this once before.
As expected Ron launched himself at the array of food on offer. Seamus laughed as Ron gobbled.
"Calm down Ron, it's like you haven't eaten in a week" Seamus said with his classic Irish twang.
"Not Hogwarts food" Ron said between bites. He wasn't wrong, Hogwarts food was far superior to any other food, even Mrs Weasley's cooking. It was a nice surprise to the muggle-borns that school food could actually be nice.
I looked down the Gryffindor table to try and spot Hermione. I couldn't see her, but she often missed meals when she was upset, as it was the only time the common room was empty. She didn't like people seeing her cry. I discreetly made her a sandwich with what was on the table and wrapped it up. I looked to see what Draco was doing.
He was sat with his elbows on the table and his head resting on his hand. He mouthed,
"kill me now." I gave him and smile and mouthed back,
"Come to Gryfinndor after dinner." He nodded and took a bite of sausage.
I turned back to face Dean.
"Good break Harry?" He asked.
"Yeah it was great thanks, how about yours?" I said returning the question.
"I went skiing with my family, Seamus came with us" he said pointing to Seamus who was next to him.
"Yeah it was me first time" Seamus said.
"I've never been skiing, what's it like?" I said starting a conversation.
"Really fun, we should all go one time" Dean said politely.
Dinner was beginning to end and people were returning to their houses. Draco got up and came over to walk back to Gryffindor together.
"Thank god that's over" Draco said as we strolled through the corridor. He looked at me before saying,
"You really love it here don't you, I can see it on your face. Every time we come back to school you're glowing" Draco said pushing the door open to the common room.
"It my home" I said shrugging my shoulders.
"I will be down in a second" I said to Draco.
"No problem" he said as he sat in the chairs around the fire with Ron, Dean and Seamus. I rushed up the stairs and knocked on the girl's bathroom door.
"Hermione are you in there?" I asked. I heard no reply.
"Right, I'm coming in" I said opening the door. Hermione was sat on a bench drying her eyes.
"I didn't say you could come in" she said blotting her face with the sleeve of her jumper.
"And anyway you're not allowed in here, you're a boy" she said trying to sound like she hadn't been crying.
"Well it's not like I'm here to perv on any of the girls" I said. Hermione gave a weak smile. I reached into my robe and brought out the sandwich I made for her.
"Thank you" she said quietly before taking a bite.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" I asked sympathetically. She shook her head.
"Will you tell me if I can?" I said reinforcing my support. She nodded.
"Do you want me to leave you alone?" I asked. She nodded once again.
A second-year saw me leave the girl's toilets and her face filled with shock. I didn't bother to correct her. I walked down to the common room where everyone was chatting. I sat next to Draco, he patted his lap and I moved on to it. I snuggled against his chest. I could hear his pounding heart. He stroked my back and carried on the conversation.
"What would happen if you put a werewolf on the moon?" Ron asked.
"He'll explode and die as there's no oxygen on the moon" Draco replied.
"I never said we'd send him up without a suit you absolute monster" Ron said. We all just burst into laughter. Dean placed his hand at the top of Seamus's thigh. Ron noticed and said,
"Oi Oi" in a football chant kind of way.
When Dean didn't take his hand off is Seamus's leg Ron asked,
"wait, are you two a thing?"
"Yeah we have been for some time" Dean said. Seamus nodded.
"Haha I knew it, my gaydar is never wrong" Draco said, happy with himself.
"Does anyone here actually like girls?" Ron asked smiling that he was so unaware of Dean and Seamus's relationship.
"I do" a voice said coming from the corner of the room. We all looked to see who it was. Ginny was sitting at a table doing some school work.
We all once again burst into uncontrollable laughter.
