Checking in

Draco, Neville and I sat down at the Gryffindor table and started to eat breakfast. There weren't many people there yet, but I noticed Luna and Ginny sitting opposite each other smiling. Draco noticed too and gave Ginny a nod of approval. Ginny gave a shy smile back.

Dean and Seamus eventually joined us.

"Any word on Ron and Hermione?" Dean asked whilst spreading butter on some toast.

"No, but I'm going to go to the hospital wing before lessons start to check in on them" I said hopeful that they had both recovered.

"Please tell them we wish them well" Neville said quietly.

"Of course I will" I said with a genuine smile. I Glanced at the teachers table and saw Snape staring at Draco. He had obviously heard the news of Draco's complaint.

"Don't look, but Snape's giving you the evils" I said to Draco. Both Seamus and Draco turned to look.

"Bloody hell, I said don't look" I said with exasperation.

"Sorry" Seamus said before biting into a sausage.

"What a wicked man" Draco mumbled.

"Isn't he your godfather or something" Dean said to Draco.

"No, he's just friends with my parents" Draco said stabbing his fork into his waffles. It was clear he was tense, but nobody wanted to bring it up. Nobody apart from me.

"Don't let him get to you like that" I said placing my hand on Draco's. He turned to look at me and then sighed.

"Yeah I shouldn't, but it just grinds my gears, I feel like I'm being spied on. Like he reports back to my parents with everything I say or do" Draco said resting his head on his hand.

Lessons began to draw closer and I said my goodbyes. Whilst on my way I muttered pleads that they would both be alright. My words bounced around the stone corridor. The tapping of my feet on the tiles and the flapping of my robes was muted in order for thoughts of the absolute worst to fill my head.

Ron and Hermione were my first real friends. They were some of the first people that showed me true kindness. Wearing Dudley's ginormous hand-me-downs meant that I was almost invisible. Almost as I seemed to be burned into Dudley's brain as a sworn enemy.

I reached the hospital wing and hesitantly walked to the thin oak desk Madam Pomfrey was sitting at. As soon as she noticed that I was there the stood up and flattened out her dress.

"How can I help you Mr Potter" she said with complete professionalism.

"I just wanted to check on Hermione and Ron" I said delicately.

"Mr Weasley is awake and talking, but I'm afraid it may be a few more days before Mrs Granger returns to full health" she said in a sort of soft militaristic tone.

I bit the insides of my cheeks before asking,

"may I see Ron?" She pressed her lips together in a way that suggested she wasn't immediately sure of what answer to give me.

"Yes" she finally said, "but only for a few minutes, lessons begin soon." I nodded gratefully and made my way over to Ron's bed.

Ron noticed and gave me a huge smile, but I could still see pain in his eyes. It had faded from when we first took him to the hospital wing, but I was definitely still there.

"How are you?" I asked sitting down on the edge of the bed.

"Alright, I've still got to do school work though" he said gesturing to the book on his lap.

"You know they haven't let me see her, they've hid her behind those curtains the entire time" Ron said pointing to Hermione's bed.

"I'm sure it's for a good reason" I said trying to relay some sort of reassurance.

"Probably" Ron said rather deflated. I twiddled my fingers not knowing what to say. This feeling was completely unfamiliar. Ron and I had always had a natural connection, our personality gelled and it seemed that our conversations flowed effortlessly. But not today, it was as if a stiffness surrounded us. It's a feeling that I hope doesn't become an acquaintance.

The sound of Madam Pomfrey's hard shoes meeting the floor became closer.

"I think that's enough for now, if you'll kindly return to your lessons" she said in a warm tone.

"Sure" I said slightly reluctantly as I had spent so little time with Ron. I gave him a small wave goodbye and walked out, but not before I tried to steal a look at Hermione unsuccessfully.

I had transfiguration so I made my way to McGonagall's class room. I wasn't technically late but everyone was already seated and the creek of the door made everyone look my way. I quietly walked to Draco's desk. He gave me a smile and interlocked his right hand with my left one so I could still write the notes on the board. He made sure to keep his hand under the desk so our little display of affection was only known by us.

"As the owl mocks are right around the corner, I will allow you to complete private study on a topic that needs some attention" McGonagall said to the class. Upon hearing these words Seamus immediately turned around to speak to me, presumably about Hermione and Ron. But before any words could leave his mouth McGonagall said, "that is not an invitation to talk for two hours. Quite chat about the work is allowed, but any personal conversations should be left till lunch."

Seamus slowly turned back around trying not to show his unsavoury expression to McGonagall. I opened my text book at the mice into glasses section and began to make notes. I removed my hand instinctively from Draco's so he could write as well. To my surprise he held my hand again.
