Somehow we all, including Anguis, made it back to Grimmauld place in one piece late Saturday night.
Sirius couldn't even walk properly so he slept in a heap at the bottom of the stairs. Lupin brought him a pillow and blanket so he wouldn't be too uncomfortable.
Draco was a bit tipsy at the start of the night, but by now he had completely sobered up. We created a makeshift enclosure for Anguis with an old shoebox. Kreacher brought up some insects for him, god knows why he had them.
Draco passed out as soon as his head it the pillow. I, however, wanted to watch Anguis for a bit. He was really cute but also badass enough for Draco.
"Who's a good boy?" I said petting the slithery creature on the head.
"Shut up with your snake talk, I'm trying to sleep" grumbled Draco.
I didn't even realise I had slipped into Parseltongue.
"Sorry," I said in a whisper before getting into bed.
I lay, staring at the ceiling. It could have been for a moment or for hours: I had completely lost myself. The dead of night can do that to you sometimes, yesterday felt like a second ago, but tomorrow seems light-years away.
I've always found an eery sort of comfort late at night, the stillness, the silence, everything is muted. It was my time and mine only. I wasn't expected to do anything, please anyone. I could do, feel and be who I wanted.
I could close my eyes and transform myself anywhere. The laws of physics no longer constrained me, not in my dreams.
It's in the dead of night where that careful balance is found, between imaging and dreaming. Between sleep and awake.
I must have fallen asleep because when I next opened my eyes sun shone through the window.
Draco was over by the chest of drawers packing his things. I watched him for a moment, his movements, the way he'd gently lay down the perfectly folded clothes on top of one another.
Draco sensed me watching him and turned around.
"Well good morning sleepy head" he said with a grin.
The way he stood against the draws caused his top to move up and display a small part of his lower torso.
"Come here" I mumbled in a grumbly morning voice.
Draco walked over slowly and jumped on top of me. He kissed me on the forehead and stroked my face. I nuzzled into his hand wanting to feel more of his skin on mine. He knew this and sat me up into a hug. His hands clutched my bare back as I rested my head on his shoulder and his on mine.
We eventually released and I plodded to the bathroom to sort myself out. When I came back I found Draco packing my stuff.
"Oh don't worry, I'll do that" I said shooing him away with my hands.
"No it's fine, I'm halfway through now I might as well finish" he said moving my clothes from the draws to my trunk.
I got dressed in the clothes he had left out for me. I sat on the bed.
"What are you thinking about?" Draco asked.
"Hermione" I replied.
Draco gave a half-smile and picked up my hand, he stroked it with his thumb.
"She is going to bounce back from this, she is going to recover," Draco said comfortingly.
"I know, I know" I said convincing myself.
Later we walked downstairs, Sirius was sitting with his head resting on the table while clutching a cold black coffee.
"Good sleep?" I asked sarcastically.
"Not my worst" Sirius replied half-heartedly.
"I think we're too late for breakfast" Draco said sitting down.
"Yeah, Kreacher is making that half breakfast half lunch thing" Sirius replied sipping his coffee.
"Brunch?" Draco suggested.
"Yeah, that" Sirius replied.
"Where's Lupin?" I asked looking around.
"Probably doing professor things" Sirius said shrugging his shoulders, "anyway how's your snake Draco?"
Draco gently pulled him out of his sleeve.
"What was he doing up there?" I said astounded.
"He likes it" Draco replied.
Anguis started to Slither to the edge of the table.
"Stop!" I said. The snake stopped immediately and slithered back towards Draco.
"That is the creepiest and coolest thing I have ever seen" Sirius said waking up a little.
"Yeah, it's going to come in handy" Draco replied with a smile.
