When the unexpected became the inevitable

Chapter 45

-April

Killer Queen is blasting through my speakers as I'm driving to Reed Enterprise.

  I hope he isn't in a meeting. 

I pull up outside of the building and park my car on the pavement. I walk through the double doors and head straight for the elevator. Once I've reached the top floor I realise that Alex's assistant isn't sitting behind her desk. In fact, everyone is in their office.

I walk to the doors of Alex's office and knock. There's no response so I walk in.

"Alex?" I gasp.

There he is. Standing. Kissing. Gwendolyn. His blazer is on the floor, his hands now gripping the edge of his desk. Gwendolyn turns and smiles at me. One of her legs are in between his and her arms are draped over his shoulders.

He wanted to be with me last night. But now he's here with her? She's engaged!

I gasp again at the thought of Landon. He might be an arsehole but no one deserved to be cheated on.

"Don't let me interrupt you." I spit and practically run out of his office and to the elevator. I hear him call my name, I'm just praying I can disappear before he can reach me. I step into the elevator and turn around to see Alex, standing. He starts walking towards me so I frantically the button to close the door and luckily it does.

I sigh and my eyes start watering. How has he hurt me so much when we aren't even together? I sink to the floor and continue crying. I don't want to see him again. What type of person behaves like that? Gwendolyn is engaged! 

I lost my best friend.

The elevator stops so I get up and wipe my eyes. The entrance is busy as usual and no one knows me so I just focus on walking out of the doors for good.

"April?" 

I turn around and see Chris in a grey, 3 piece suit walking towards me. He smiles at first but frowns as he gets closer.      

"What are you doing here?" He asks.       

 "I was looking for you." I lie which makes him laugh a little. His blonde hair moves with him.

"I thought you'd be more smiley after what I heard happened in the city of love last night." He jokes. I try to smile back but I can feel my eyes watering and his smile fades.

"April what's going on?" He asks and puts a hand on my shoulder. I open my mouth to speak but I'm interrupted.

"April." I hear Alex's voice coming from the direction of the elevator. Immediately I shrug Chris's hand off me but he hold me back. 

"April tell me what's wro-"     

"He kissed Gwendolyn." I quickly interrupt, "Now let me go." He still doesn't let go, instead he pulls me to him gently and whispers.      

 "Are you sure?"          

"In the office. I saw." I croak and wrap my arms around him. He returns the hug as I grip even tighter.

"April." Alex says from behind me. My head is still buried in Chris's chest but I know he's behind me.            

"I don't want to talk to him." I whisper to Chris who nods discreetly.    

"Me and April are going to do stuff. I'm taking the rest of the day off." Chris says calmly but his body still tense.    

"The hell you are!" Alex shouts. "You aren't leaving, especially not with April I need to talk to her."

Chris releases me and stands in front of me.       

 "We're leaving Alexander. Turn around, Gwenny's waiting for you." Chris says in a deep voice. The sad thing is Gwendolyn was actually standing behind Alex. Looking like a super model with a pleased look on her face. Chris turns to face me and I link my arm into him and we start walking.     

"If you walk out of here I will fire you on the damn spot!" Alex yells and Chris dismiss's it and we carry on walking. My heart is pounding so hard I can hear it. We finally get out of the building and I gasp almost like I've been holding in a breath.

"Chris I'm not letting you get fired go back." I plead but he just smiles. 

"Xander wouldn't fire me April. We're a team he's just angry."       

"He kissed her." I say in a whisper.  

"Hey, Xander loves you. I'm sure he has an explanation. Hopefully a good one."

We're silent for a couple moments then I walk to my car.    

"You're kidding." I sigh.           

 "What's up?" He asks and I wave the ticket fro my car in his face.

 "You parked on a double yellow line."                                                                                                                                                                                            

"I was eager." I say and put the ticket back between the windshield. "Are you actually not going back to work?" I ask.     

 "Yes ma'am I'm not going back."                                    

"Conor and Cass are at my place waiting for me. Come? We can pick up East on the way." I ask and he nods. I pick up the ticket again and we get into my car.

"Chris." I start, "Can we not tell anyone about Alex and Gwendolyn."  

 "Of course." He gives me a small smile. "When did Conor get here?" 

We talk about Conor and work on the drive back to the apartment. Almost like the Gwen and Alex thing never happened.

Why did you have to do the unexpected Alex?
