Elijah pursued me as I rode on Swift-Hoof, the surviving horse of last night's terror.
Luckily we'd made it to town but the horror never faded.
My hand was gone.
It was gone.
But then that man, that demon with red eyes, redder than mine licked his fingers rubbed them around my wrist and stuck my hand back on like reconnecting puzzle pieces.
I had to tell Elijah, he probably wouldn't believe me but who else was I supposed to tell, I was having a crisis and only someone from my childhood could calm me down at this point and Albert, Conrad and the others don't count because they were equally traumatized.
Though I don't Elijah knows what it's like for something so unexpected to happen in such a horrific manner.
We reached the filed outside of town and I stressed Swift-Hoof into the direction of the tree line below the tall mountains.
Finally, a slowed Swift-Foot and he came to a stop, Elijah on our heels had to pull back as hard as he could to stop his own black stallion who kicked its front feet out in defiance.
"Your horse is as stubborn as you," I joked hoping to lighten my own mood.
He scratched the back of his head and shrugged.
No witty comeback?
I dismantled and let Swift-Hood eat the tall grass as I took cover under the shade of one of the trees. I sat on the unearthed roots and I focused on the ground waiting to see Elijah in the corners of my eyes sitting beside me.
He sat down and aside from the light breeze there was no sound.
It was awkward as hell and he looked at his hands shifting nervously as I tried to find the right words.
"So maybe..." he began instead, "Ve could start by talking about Vhats happened up to now."
I guess that was good enough but I didn't have to right words and blurted things out in one or two-word sentences.
"Claus died."
Elijah jolted and looked at me wide eyes but before he could say anything I continued. "So did Claud."
He tried to place a hand on my shoulder but I stood up and walked away from him. Just enough distance so that he couldn't reach me from his seat.
"I became leader of my troop. I'm almost a full-fledged knight. Vast night I lost twenty-two friends and vhat includes Helmut."
Elijah looked scared and unsure how to react as he was at a loss for words.
"Right through the head. He was just gone...Elijah, you warned me I'd lose people. I never thought it would feel like this...it was just out of nowhere but that's not even the worst part. My mentor, we found him bleeding from the neck and warning us to stay away and I'd love to sing my praises vight now but I von't tell you how awesome I was leading my men into the fight...I killed people..."
Elijah was taken aback and seemed for concerned now.
I managed to continue, "we won but...the person leading these men, he didn't die. Elijah, he wouldn't die."
He seemed confused and I elaborated.
"Elijah. I met a demon."
He got to his feet and grabbed my shoulder.
"Vhat do you mean? A veal demon? Demons aren't veal!" He insisted and I pushed him away. He held his chest as if that hurt and I ignored it and moved on.
