Greta smiled apologetically as Francis stepped aside to let her in the house. Who lets strangers in the house at three in the morning? Who knocks on a door at three in the morning?
"Can we 'elp you?" Francis asked, concerned.
"Eh-oh, I um, I got a vittle turned avound, and I thought I heard somevone scream, so I vanted to make sure everything vas, okay and your house vas the only one vith lights on so I figured it must be you and vhat I could maybe get directions..." she asked nervously.
Francis smiled, "perceptive and a Vigilante? 'Ow Sweet you are," He spewed compliments left and right.
"Aren't jou vhe pizza girl?" Gilbert asked, recalling her delivering pizza when Eliza had still been here.
"Si, but she worked at a restaurant before that," Antonio informed, and Gilbert nodded, assuming it must've been from the time he wasn't here.
"Umm, yeah...college student jou know how it is..." she scratched the back of her head nervously.
If she was nervous, maybe don't step into a bachelor pad at Three A.M.?
She saw me in the back and smiled and waved, looking relieved another girl was here, but Gilbert sensed my hidden hostility behind my smile and put a hand on my back soothingly.
"Come sit," Francis motioned to the table chair and pulled it out for her. "We'll get you some water; you look a bit worn out."
She blushed and sat down, thanking him for his "chivalry."
Antonio leaned against the living room wall, and Gilbert, Francis, and I occupied the other three chairs. Francis handed Greta a water, and she drank slowly, as if testing it.
We sat in silence, waiting for her to speak, but I decided to act first.
"So...do you always jog at three-o-clock in the morning?" I asked with obvious suspicion, and she shook her head and set the glass of water down gently.
"Vike I mentioned I got a bit turned around on my jog-"
"You take jogs this early?"
"No, not usually, but I felt a bit cramped...so..."
I eyed her backpack and continued, "you bring backpacks on your runs?"
She blushed and shook her head, "not usually...but I needed vater, and I thought I'd open shop early, so I brought my vork clothes."
"Where do you work now?" Antonio asked, trying to lighten the conversation.
"I vork at the gym, and I also valk dogs now."
"Quite a ride range of experience," I commented, chin on the back of my hands as if it were an interrogation. To me, it was. I was highly suspicious Greta was the person Lynette had been talking about. The one that came to follow me.
"Entry-level jobs...it's good to have the experience," she spoke quietly as if very shy.
She had harry-potter style round glasses and short cut brown hair, a large chest, and was fairly short and a bit curvy but certainly not overweight.
"Right."
There was a pause of awkward silence, and Gilbert spoke up.
"So...vaht do you do at the gym?"
"I'm a spotter."
Gilbert nearly spit out the water he'd been drinking.
"Heh? Jou? No offense but-"
"I'm small. I know—all the more reason to be strong. Women vike me must be strong in vhis world," she said with quiet determination.
Francis nodded.
