I ran home, away from Anso. I'm not sure he could even see where I'd gone based on how fast I ran.

Gilbert is here.

And he's alive.

So are Albert and Conrad and Zsigmund!

Are Helmut and Claus and Claud?

Or are they dead...is that why they aren't together.

No.

Focus on the positive Elijah!

...

Eliza...

No.

Right now I'll be Elijah.

No one but me has to know and then I can see Gilbert.

I have so much to tell him.

But not one thing. The one thing that changed everything, I could never tell him that. How would he even act?

He'd avoid me, he always avoided women.

He could never know.

But I also couldn't let my family know what I was about to do.

I shut the door to my room. My mama was in the garden with the twins, my brothers were miles away and my father was running the new butcher shop.

Papas clothes were too big. I couldn't ask Anso, he'd find it weird if he noticed clothes missing. Besides, that'd lead to his room under false pretenses, he might get the wrong idea and I was not about to ruin myself for that fucker.

I had to lie. I didn't want to but I had to.

The neighbors at the end of the block. They owned a clothing stand. Hoods mostly but if I asked to borrow something they might agree. After all, I'm the rumored innocent beautiful angel courting the richest man in the marketing business. What could I possibly have to hide?

"Agnes," I called to the owner's wife.

She smiled and waved, alarmed to see me running. Why? Because women don't run, they walk elegantly and gracefully. Bull crap.

"Elizabetta," She asked worriedly, "is something vhe matter?"

I huffed. I pretended to be tired from running. Otherwise the connection I run often might be found out. However, it'd been months since I was allowed to do such a thing and I truly did feel a rush from the easiest run.

Hand over my heart I breathed out 'delicately' and gave her a warm smile. "My Bruder has made a surprise visit to town, ve don't have clothes his size, his are dirty...I vas just vondering if I could borrow some?"

She smiled, "Vell I can't lend you the vones ve have for sale but my son Garret, he's about your size, do you think vhey vill fit?"

I nodded eagerly and thanked her profusely. I immediately took off in the other direction and to the forest on the border of the village just below the mountain cliff.

The mountains were beautiful. Not far away were the mountains where the nobles lived. I wonder if Roderick lives in one of those houses. What would be the odds of that? But I'm not a lucky person, these last months have proved that.

I held the clothes to my chest and looked around making sure no one was eyeing me suspiciously and thankfully for me they weren't.

I snuck into our cottage window, the others were away or distracted still.

I undid my outer corset, untied my apron, untied the laces on the back of my dress, slipped off the outer layer of the dress, then the layer beneath, then undid the corset that made it hard for me to breathe. Then I took off the thin fabric as long as pants that acted as underwear then I still had my bra but I decided to leave that on.
