_______

Hyun-Ji ran to the bathroom and immediately turned on the shower to drown out the sound of her being sick.

It's just the squid it's just the squid it's just-

Her thoughts were cut short as emptied the contents of her stomach into the porcelain bowl. Even after she was completely empty she continued to dry heave uncontrollably. Hot tears streaked their way down her face and her nose ran profusely. She was a mess.

After some time she finally stopped retching and composed herself. She brushed her teeth, again, and washed her face. Sitting on the side of the tub, she retrieved her phone from where she dropped it in her haste.

_______

"What was the first day of your last period?"

Hyun-Ji thought for a moment but couldn't remember. "Can I check my phone? I keep it in an app."

The nurse nodded and gave her time to find the information. The home page of the app opened and Hyun-Ji stopped breathing. She could feel her heart beating hard in her chest as she stared at the screen.

(This can't be right...)

Decorated with hearts, flowers, and a smiling sun were words that made her feel sicker than all the odors in the cafeteria combined:

'It's been 6 weeks since your last period! If you are trying to become pregnant, now's the time to test!'

Hyun-Ji opened the actual calendar in the app and frantically scrolled back to the last time she marked when her period started. She struggled to keep her breathing even and her fingers steady.

(6 weeks ago. I must have just forgotten to log it. There's no way this can be right.)

She dove deep into her memory banks. Her cycles were super predictable. If she forgot to log her last period in the app, that meant her period would have been-

"2 weeks ago," she said.

But it hadn't come. She would have remembered the Red Queen. It was always too painful to forget.

"Thank you." The nurse jotted down her answer on the paper. "I'm not singling you out. I have to ask everyone," the nurse smiled and shrugged. "Here's a note to take back to class."

Hyun-Ji didn't hear any more of her words. She politely took the paper from the nurse, mumbled another thank you, and walked back through the now cold hallways on shaky legs.
