Just as she said, the estate featured an expansive botanical garden. The couple walked through the doors into the comfortable night air along the pathway lined with a stone balustrade and lit by lanterns. The vines of climbing plants spilled over the barrier and onto the edges of the walkway, lining it with green.
The more they walked, the better Jungkook felt. He just wanted to enjoy the remainder of the night away from both Kwan and Sujin, and he hoped his anger hadn't ruined it for Hyun-Ji.
He looked down at her as they walked further from the mansion. She held onto his arm, the corners of her mouth lifting while she gazed at their beautiful surroundings. He found himself mimicking her, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
The further they walked, the quieter it had become and the soft strumming of a guitar could be heard in the distance. Further ahead was a gazebo large enough to hold a gathering decorated in flowers, vines, and countless paper lanterns, and a guitarist played a slow, romantic melody for the partygoers that found themselves meandering in the area far away from the crowd.
She gravitated to the pavilion with him following her lead until she came to a stop just in front of it, watching the musician who was playing a song that Jungkook had heard before.
He looked down again at her sparkling eyes as she stood entranced by the melody, at the way she smiled more when he played a chord that was particularly pleasing to her.
"One more dance?" He asked.
Hyun-Ji smiled up at him and nodded. He seemed to have read her mind, and together they walked into the fragrant gazebo. They faced each other and went to begin slow dancing, but ran into a small problem:
Hyun-Ji's belly had grown. A lot.
They tried to pull each other closer, but that meant someone had to lean over awkwardly. Hyun-Ji looked down at her abdomen, breaking into a fit of giggles.
"I really didn't think this through," she laughed.
Her laughter was infectious, and he found himself laughing with her at their predicament. Something told him that this wouldn't be the last time their daughter would interrupt them.
He still wasn't going to let her stop him.
Hyun-Ji's dress swirled as he spun her to face away from him, and Jungkook wrapped his arms around her in a back hug. He held her close to his body and began to slowly sway with her in time with the guitar's music. She put her hands over his and let her body relax into him, resting her head against his chest, her eyes closing.
The sound of his voice joined the guitar, blending perfectly with the slow-paced melody.
"It's like catching lightning, the chances of finding someone like you."
Hyun-Ji turned her head, looking up at him with her eyes wide open and mouth dropped.
"It's one in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do."
"Stop, you're making me nervous," he said quickly.
"Sorry," she giggled, going back to her original position and closing her eyes.
"And with every step together,
We just keep on getting better.
"So can I have this dance?
Can I have this dance?"
Hyun-Ji's brow lifted in the center as she fought against the tears that started to form. She refused to cry tonight, but listening to his captivating tenor, she knew she was fighting a losing battle.
She had no idea he could sing.
Jungkook continued, letting the lyrics of the song speak the message in his heart and finally understanding what the lyrics meant. He didn't like singing in front of an audience, it was too much pressure.
But just this once, he wanted to. For her.
So this was love.
Hyun-Ji never wanted this song, this moment to end. She wanted to freeze time, to begin an infinite loop where they could dance like this endlessly. How was it possible to already miss a moment that you were currently in? She didn't know, but she knew she never wanted this dance to be over.
But maybe...
It never had to be.
She saw them dancing together like this, late at night after Blueberry was finally asleep. She saw him putting his arms around her and her resting her head against his chest, dancing in the center of the kitchen of their home. She saw herself having to fight her own daughter for his attention, and him compromising with them by holding Blueberry in one arm and Hyun-Ji with the other.
To make both of his princesses happy.
The song concluded, and Jungkook turned her around to face him again, wiping away the tears that she didn't know had fallen. He delicately touched his lips to hers, savoring her sweetness. He then looked deeply into her eyes, the light of the lanterns reflecting in them, wanting nothing more than to escape with her from this prom and all the drama that came with it.
He didn't care about the prom. He didn't care about the superficialities of who would be crowned prom king or queen.
He already had his Princess.
"I love you, Jungkook."
He smiled down at her, his heart feeling more full than he'd ever felt in his life. "I love you too. More than anything."
More than everything.
More than himself.
She made him feel whole. She showed him what it felt like to be loved, to be special to someone. She made him want to be a better person, her and their child giving his life direction and purpose.
He needed her as much as he needed oxygen. He had cried like a child when she disappeared, feeling like he would die had anything happened to her, feeling like he would trade his own if it meant her safety.
He looked deeply into her eyes and slowly tucked her hair behind her ear, feeling more and more overwhelmed with each passing second. It was a divine feeling. It was an awful feeling: one that felt heavy in his chest and constricted his throat. He gazed at her, seeing the lanterns and himself reflecting back, and feeling utterly consumed.
By love.
A high-pitched whine echoed throughout the grounds of the estate, followed by a familiar explosion, and brilliant colors painted the dark sky.
Hyun-Ji's face lit up, and she pulled him with her as she exited the pavilion. More charges were fired into the sky, the resulting explosion filling it with so much color, reflecting exactly what he felt inside.
He wrapped his arms around her, and together they watched the magic of the fireworks. Jungkook was convinced that there was absolutely nothing that could have made this night more perfect.
After the finale, Jungkook kissed her hair, and she looked up at him. "Are you ready to leave?" she said softly. She must have read his mind.
"Of course," he replied.
