Hyun-Ji walked as fast as her legs could carry her to the medical facility. Her appointment time was quickly approaching and she was running late thanks to her parents. The only reason she was able to escape was because of a quickly fabricated excuse of a project in which she had to leave the house in order to research.
It was starting to become harder to hide her body at home. Wearing sweaters all the time was becoming unbearable. She was always hot now, and it was sweltering whenever she forced herself to wear one, which was almost daily. Winter was quickly becoming her favorite season, though. At least she had relief out here in the cold. Relief from both the heat and her parent's watchful eyes.
Her father specifically, who alternated from inattentive to hyper-focused on her. For now, it was the former, and for once she didn't mind. She needed it to stay that way for as long as possible.
Hyun-Ji opened the glass doors and immediately scanned the uncomfortably warm waiting area for Jungkook to find him already there in a corner seat engrossed in his phone. He wore a dark knit hat today, his shiny black fringe peeking from under it just begging to be touched. Just the sight of him made her unable to suppress a smile. He stood and greeted her with a tight hug when she approached him after checking in.
And what a blissful hug it was.
He smelled like a winter fireplace, like the colors orange and brown. Like the time she and her mother plus several close relatives spent their winter break from school in a little cabin in the mountains. He smelled of chestnut, cedar, and comforting embraces. The corners of her mouth rose into a smile as she slowly inhaled the feeling of smooth suede under her fingertips, sweet vanilla bean, and the twinkling laughter of four little girls huddled under an enormous quilt, their mouths stained with hot cocoa and gingerbread.
"Whatever you're wearing," she said dreamily, "wear it forever." She then closed her eyes and nuzzled her face into the cotton of his shirt.
Jungkook smiled brightly, his eyebrows lifting at her compliment. "Ok," he breathed, his heart quickening at her approval. Hyun-Ji's nose was hard to please these days.
"Han Hyun-Ji?"
Both Hyun-Ji and Jungkook turned at the sound of her name. The same pleasant nurse from her last sonogram greeted them, her hand splayed across her heart at the sight of the couple still locked in each other's arms.
"Hello, Nurse Bih-Ann!" Hyun-Ji's excitement was hard to contain. She had been waiting for this day for two months, so to say she was anxious was an understatement. They chatted happily on their way to their destination.
Once again they found themselves in the large room with the reclining exam chair. She quickly shrugged off her thick jacket, her sweater soon following, and climbed onto the chair wearing just sweatpants and a T-shirt, eager to begin. Jungkook chuckled at her giddiness and sat next to her just as before. He couldn't recall ever seeing her be this excited for anything.
