_______

I can't be pregnant.

Hyun-Ji sat immobile on the edge of her bed. The only sounds in her dimly lit bedroom were the chirps of happy crickets outside her window and her own shallow breathing.

What do I even do now? I don't know what to do. I can't...

Without warning her eyes began to sting. Tears began to fall rapidly, staining her grey sweatshirt. She didn't sob, nor did she bother to wipe them away. She let them fall freely.

It almost felt like this was a dream. This wasn't her real life. She was still an innocent sleeping virgin: a virgin that didn't have a positive pregnancy test concealed in a shopping bag under her bed because her parents would see it in the trash and trash day wasn't until tomorrow.

This was just a dream: A terrible nightmare that cautions young virgin girls such as herself about the consequences of being alone with boys unsupervised. One that she would soon awaken from startled and out of breath, make a Sign of the Cross, say a short and silent prayer, and return to sleep peacefully in her virtue.

But she was already awake, and her innocence gone. Given to a boy that was just as innocent and naive as she. A boy that was still unaware. Unaware that he had given her half of his genetic code, which had then linked with hers to form another.

Another that was rapidly growing inside her.

You have to tell him.

How do you tell someone that didn't want a child that they're going to be a father? She didn't even want to be a mother, not for a long time, maybe not ever! Now life and freedom as they knew it was coming to an end.

Hyun-Ji's eyes landed on the stack of university brochures on her desk. Her shoulders dropped further and her breath caught in her throat as she stared at them in despair. The reality that her escape from her dysfunctional home was now nonexistent was soul-crushing. It was still only the first semester. She would be lucky if she made it through the rest of the school year, let alone through a bachelor's program.
