"Hyun-Ji?!"
Jungkook sounded absolutely panicked through the phone. He hadn't heard a word from her all day, she didn't come to school, no one had any idea where she was. She just vanished.
It took all of Hyun-Ji's strength to not break down at the sound of his voice. She opened her mouth but her voice was nonexistent, not knowing what to say, not knowing where to begin. Her brow came to a peak in the center of her forehead, her chin trembling, eyes inflamed. She clutched the phone, drew in an unsteady breath, and her wobbly voice uttered the only thing she possibly could.
"...Oppa?"
That one word was like an arrow to his heart.
Jungkook's stomach lurched. It was as if he could physically feel the agony in her voice.
"Oppa, help me." Hyun-Ji couldn't hold her tears in any longer.
Jungkook immediately jumped out of bed and started to dress. "Where are you?!"
"I'm at... the s-school," she sobbed.
"Ok. I'm coming. Don't hang up!"
He quickly put his earbuds in his ears and his phone into his pocket. He took the stairs two at a time and shoved his feet into the closest pair of trainers, then threw on a hoodie.
There was no point in telling his mother that he was leaving. She was already asleep.
As soon as the door was closed and locked behind him, Jungkook broke into a sprint. He pumped his arms and legs as fast as he possibly could, all the while listening to her continuous weeping in his ears.
A few minutes later, fatigue began to set in. He pushed through the burning sensation in his legs and continued to run, feeling like his time was running out.
Like her time was running out.
His brow creased as she began to cry harder in his ears, and he continued to run, pushing through the tightening in his chest, pushing through the lump in his throat.
Just when he felt like he couldn't run anymore, like his legs would give out, the gates to the campus grounds could be seen. Adrenaline surged through him again and he continued to run, pushing through the stitch in his side, pushing through the fear of what he would find when he finally reached her.
His eyes widened when she came into view.
"Hyun-Ji!" He called out between breaths.
She quickly turned around at the sound of her name.
Jungkook grit his teeth and kept running, ignoring his lung's persistent demand for more oxygen and his heart's inability to pump blood through his body fast enough. Dread continued to mount within him as he watched her drop the duffel bag she was holding and take slow steps towards him, her gait painfully abnormal.
What happened to you?
She shakily lifted her arms to him as he got closer, ignoring the soreness in her muscles, ignoring the throbbing in her ankle. She just needed to reach him.
