Jungkook walked into a dark house with his green apron slung over his shoulder and tossed his keys onto the end table. They landed right on top of an envelope addressed to him.

From Dong-A University.

He had forgotten all about college, he was so wrapped up in Hyun-

No. He wasn't going to think about her right now. He didn't even want to mention her name.

Picking up the envelope, he turned it over and tore it open:

Dong-A University
Department of Admissions

Dear Jeon Jungkook:

The admissions committee has carefully reviewed your application to Dong-A University. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you and place in the graduating class of 20xx. This year's applicant pool was the strongest in the university's history, and in light of this, we were unable to offer admission to every worthy applicant.

We recognize that this will come as a disappointment to you. Nevertheless, we encourage you to make your future educational plans with the same enthusiasm-

Jungkook laughed sardonically and tore the letter in half. He balled the pieces up, walked to the kitchen, and shot it like a free throw into the trash, where the rest of his future was.

"Two fucking points," he muttered.

After that, he wasn't even tired anymore.

He went to his room and changed into some old clothes, then walked into the nursery. The borders were now neatly taped off, and the light fixture and power outlets were covered. All he had to do was paint. He opened a drop cloth to protect the carpeting, then opened a can of paint and poured it carefully into the paint tray.

The only sounds in the house were the ones he made.

He took his headphones out of his pocket and found the angriest song he could, blasting it in his ears to drown out the deafening silence.

Just like the associate in the store showed him, he painted in zig-zags, blending the strokes together so as to not leave streaks. It was a soft, calming color, a stark contrast to the deep burgundy he painted over.

His father liked dark rooms. He said it helped him think better.

Gradually, the wall took on a more muted hue, and the gentle color made him feel marginally better, slightly calmer. He reloaded paint onto the roller and wondered if Hyun-

No. It didn't matter if she liked the color or not. He didn't care. He wasn't doing this for her anyway. It was for his daughter. She's the only one who matters now.

How often would he see her now?

His brow drew together as he pondered the question. Work already took almost every moment not spent sleeping or in school, but now she wouldn't even be in the same house as him.

He wouldn't have the luxury of kissing her sweet face before he went to bed, nor that of waking up to feed and change her in the middle of the night. All of the stuff that new parents complain about, he wouldn't get to experience.
