"Everything is going to be ok."
Hyun-Ji stared at the sonogram photo as she listened to Jungkook's voice coming through the phone. She desperately wanted to believe him, but her faith had faltered long ago.
"We were going to tell them anyway, right? I know it's going to be hard, but we'll stick together," he continued.
Hyun-Ji sniffed quietly, her finger tracing the outline of their baby in the photo. Her mind was still reeling, her eyes hurt from crying, and she hadn't been this sick since the beginning of her pregnancy.
"I wish you were here," she mumbled.
"I do too, princess. I would hold you all night, and I wouldn't let you go."
A tiny smile found its way to her lips at his words. Nothing would bring her greater comfort than to be wrapped in his embrace. She felt painfully alone in her bedroom, her only company the demons of depression threatening to consume her at any moment.
She longed to feel his warmth and to inhale the scent of a winter hearth, cedar, and vanilla from his skin.
"Try to sleep, ok? I know that's asking a lot, but you need rest," he said.
As if on cue, she yawned. "Ok. I'll try. I'll see you tomorrow. Good night."
"Good night."
Hyun-Ji ended the call and kissed the sonogram photo before sitting it on her bedside table. She pulled her blanket up to her ear and curled into a ball, quickly falling into a dreamless sleep.

Cold.
Her body shuddered against the sudden cold.
Hyun-Ji furrowed her brow. She wrapped her arms around herself and tucked her knees, trying to prevent any more body heat from escaping. She had taken her oversized sleep shirt off in the night because she was hot. Now she regretted it. The remaining tank top and shorts she wore did little against the frigid air.
Suddenly, searing pain pierced her scalp. It was as if someone was pulling her hair from the roots. Her hands shot up to stop the sensation, only to find that she couldn't. Their grip was too strong. She let out a wail as the pain increased, her body involuntarily rising from her bed, following the direction her head was being pulled.
She reached up again, grabbing the wrist of her attacker. She just needed the pain to stop.
The room moved too quickly and Hyun-Ji lost her footing, stumbling to the floor and rolling her ankle in the process. She cried out when pain shot up her leg as her knee came in contact with the floor.
"Get up!" Her father's voice was like acid as he spat out the command, his iron grip on her hair leaving her no choice but to comply.
Still, she held onto his wrist with both hands, following like a rag doll wherever she was dragged, trying her hardest not to fall again.
