Jungkook loves me?
Hyun-Ji woke up to an empty room. The clock read a little after six pm, and the sun would soon begin its descent. She extended her limbs as far as she could, stretching out her muscles, a smile coming to her face.
The pillow still smelled of him: of a comforting cedar fireside, vanilla, and love.
Love.
Jungkook loves me??
This seems like a good time to overthink.
Hyun-Ji sat up in the bed and crossed her legs like a five-year-old at reading time. She ran her hands through her unruly bed hair, hoping that straightening her hair may also straighten out her stormy thoughts.
He couldn't have meant that, could he? He was clearly exhausted and probably delusional. Why would anyone in their right mind love someone like her? She was just a broken girl from a broken family. An unremarkable girl with terrible skin and sometimes crippling anxiety that had nothing to offer him besides being a semi-decent opponent in Street Fighter.
She wasn't special.
Meanwhile, he was easily the most attractive person at school, male or female. His family was whole and amazing, and he was the product of a loving household. He was kind, and brave, and smart.
And not broken like she was.
But, oh, how he made her heart dance when he said those words. Those three words had caused a little sapling of hope to be planted within her. She felt like the shattered pieces of her inner being had just been neatly arranged into a discernible puzzle, waiting for her to put them back together. Even though he couldn't reassemble the pieces for her, he had somehow given her the little nudge she needed to do it herself, just with three little words.
So this is love?
She had felt something deep for him for a long time but could never put a name to it. Now that he had said it, it was clear.
Hyun-Ji was in love.
She laughed softly, grabbing the pillow he slept on and hugging it tight to her body, a giddy feeling taking over her. Even the baby couldn't keep still. It was as if she felt Jungkook's love just as strongly as Hyun-Ji did.
Or maybe this was all in Hyun-Ji's head. Maybe he was dreaming when he said those words. Maybe she dreamt it. She had done nothing to earn his love. She wasn't even sure if she was deserving of love at all. Her father certainly seemed to feel that way.
But the way he looked into her eyes, the way he tilted her chin to make sure he had her full attention, the way he spoke... It felt so real. It had to be real.
Jungkook loves me.
And I love him.
And I never told him!
Hyun-Ji hopped out of bed, almost tripping in her haste. Did he leave her in bed alone because he was upset that she didn't say it back? She descended the stairs as quickly as she could, heart racing, hoping that he was still home.
She found him sitting at the kitchen table scribbling in a notebook, his thick chemistry textbook open in front of him. The muscles in his arm flexed as he wrote, and he would occasionally mouth out the words as he read them before writing again. His fringe was getting longer, and he would periodically run a hand through it, pushing it back and away from his face, just for it to fall into his eyes again moments later.
