It was a new day. Which means more work. As soon as I got to work I changed and looked forward to my day at work. I got myself a coffee to wake me up a little. I'd made my New Years resolution. It was to fall for less people like Alex. I was so glad that last year was over, they held some of the worst moments of my life. Chief Webber had a speech we all had to attend to, I was dreading what it would be about. "Listen up, people, New Year, new rules. Or should I say, New Year, and we will be enforcing the rules mandated by the residency review committee. There were too many mistakes made last year. Fatigue played too big a role. Exceeding 80 hours of work per week not be tolerated..." Webber told us. That was too short, I need longer in the hospital.
"Does that means we actually get to have a life?" George asked me and Izzie.
"I think so." Iz said to him.
"Yeah, I think it does." I said to him before listening back to Webber's speech,
"...Sullivan, you were on call for 28 hours. Leave when you hit 30. Grey, Y/l/n, you were both here until 2 A.M. last night, see you at noon." He said to us, I'm sorry what. I just got here and now I have to go home.
"We get to go? Free time?" Meredith asked Alex.
"Run before he changes his mind." Alex told us, we all started to walk away before Webber added.
"Oh, and, people, our nurses are gonna have to work extra hours to compensate, so treat them well. Cranky nurses don't do us any good." Webber added before walking away. Me and Mer shared a look.
"Oh, well, maybe you can cheer them up." Izzie said before chuckling. Me and Meredith walked together.
"What are we supposed do just go home?" I asked her.
"It seems like it." She said to me.
"I might pay a visit to one of three of my brothers. What are you gonna do?" I said to her.
"I might go and see my mom." She said to me. We went to the locker room and changed I went down the stairs while Mer took the lift. When I got to my car I called my mum. She answered.
"Sweetie, What do you want I'm about to head into work?" She asked me, I could tell she was holding a cup of coffee.
"I was going to visit Neil, is he at home or is he at school?" I asked her.
"No, he's at home. There was too much noise yesterday at school and me and your father decided to let him stay home." She said to me.
"Is someone with him in case he goes out." I said to her worriedly.
"Y/n, he maybe autistic but he knows what to do if he does go out." She said to me.
"All right, I know. Love you." I said to her.
"Love you too." She said before I hung up. I drove over to their house. I unlocked the door and went inside. Neil was sat on the sofa watching TV.
"Hey, Neil." I said to him as I took my shoes off and went into the living room. He stood up and hugged me.
"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be at work?" He asked me.
"I should be but I have the morning off because of some new rule enforced by Chief Webber." I said to him as we separated. I sat down next to him.
"What field have you decided to work in?" He asked me.
"Orthopaedics." I said to him.
"So your not going to be like mum, dad or Tyler?" He asked me, Tyler was our older brother.
"No, I want to go in a different direction to them." I said to him. He sat and talked to him for an hour before going back to the hospital. I didn't change I just went straight to the gallery and watched Chief Webber's surgery. A few minutes later Meredith walked in and we had a conversation. Then George entered and sat next to her.
"Hey, aren't you two supposed to be having free time?" George asked us.
"I had a conversation with my one of my youngest brothers and helped him with his homework before making lunch for the both of us." I told him telling him what progress I made in my free time.
"Oh, I did five loads of laundry, cut my split ends, studied, cleaned out the fridge. Free time sucks." Mer told George. She'd accomplished way more than me.
"You can say that again." I told her while watching the surgery.
"When would have been the right tine to hear about your boyfriends wife?" George asked Meredith, I was a tad confused about why he asked that.
"Okay, are you mad at me or something?" Mer asked him. I mean he had to be really in order to ask that.
"No. No. Sorry. It's just, I have this patient, and I get that there's a right and a wrong time to hear big news, but wouldn't you rather know sooner than later? I mean, so you can move forward one way or the other. I mean, it's a fresh start, right?" George said to us. Mer started giving him her answer. Before we focused back to the O.R. George left to go and talk to his patient.
"I feel like I've been useless all day." I said to Mer.
"I think it's because we haven't gone into the O.R. for a while." She said to me. We both left the gallery and went to change into our scrubs to start off our day. I went to fill out paperwork that I needed to do. So far I didn't have a patient, I just needed to be inside of an O.R. I'd be willing to get into an accident just to see the inside of one. But just when I almost lost hope I got pages to an O.R. by Dr. Torres, she had an open femur fracture. It looked pretty bad but we pulled it off. After a few more hours I decided to end my shift because I didn't want to run out of working hours. When I got home Kennedy was surprised that I wasn't tired. I had told her about the new hospital rule and she laughed. I told her what I did in my free time and we ended up ordering pizza. Today didn't go as planned but at least I was ok.
