I couldn't help my hands from shaking as I stood in front of a room full of people that had become my friends over the past couple of months. Some of them were smiling at me and making me feel welcome, but others were frowning just because I was in the choir room.

"I'm glad to start off this meeting with a piece of good news, we have a new member. I'm sure most of you know who this is, but please welcome to New Directions, Olivia!"

My friends from the club all clapped and cheered as I went to take a seat in between Tina and Mike, who had practically dragged me to the choir room as soon as I told them I was joining the club. My Dad also noticed that not everyone in the room was happy with a new member.

"Am I missing something guys, we should be happy about a new member?"

Kurt sighed. "If I may? We're always happy when another popular kid joins the Glee Club but we're in competition for solos anyway and now none of us have the chance because you're obviously going to favour your daughter."

I raised my hand to stop anyone from sticking up for me, I knew that they would but as it was my first day in the club, I should try and stick up for myself.

"I understand why you may think that way, but I assure you, your solos are safe. I'm here to be part of something special and if that means swaying in the back then I'm fine with that. I've already spoken to my Dad about this and we agreed that solos would be handed out fairly, not based on relations."

Finn smiled at me. "There you go, now we can celebrate our new member. Welcome to the Glee Club Liv, we're glad you're here."

Everyone cheered and clapped again even though I was embarrassed and told them to stop. Only three members of the club didn't seem excited about me being there: Rachel, Kurt and Mercedes, because they didn't want me to steal their solos but I'd already told them that I wasn't interested in their solos. Dad decided not to say anything about their disapproval of me being there and went straight into the lesson he had planned.

"Ballad from middle English, ballade." He wrote on the white board. "Who knows what this word means?"

"It's a male duck." Brittany said confidently.

"Kurt?"

He smiled, thinking he knew the correct answer. "A ballad is a love song."

"Sometimes, but they don't always express love. Ballads are stories set to music, which is why they're the perfect storm of self-expression. Stories and music are the way we express our feelings that we can't get out any other way. Okay, now, Sectionals are in a few weeks and there's a new rule this year; we have to perform a ballad."

"Looks like my weekly letter to the Ohio Show Choir Committee finally paid off!"

"Okay, so here's your assignment for this week: I'm going to pair you off, and I want you to pick a ballad to sing to your partner. Look them right in the eye, find the emotion you want to express and make them feel it."
