After a difficult week last week, paying tribute to Finn, Dad had decided that we needed to get our heads back in the game and prepare for our upcoming competition. We would channel the grief that we had for him and use it to make ourselves better because we wanted to win Nationals for him. To prove that we were still as good as we were last year, even though we were a completely different team.
"Alright, big week guys." Dad shouted as he walked into the choir room, we all gathered around the piano to listen to him. "Gather round I have here in my hand a secret list of the show choirs that we will be in competition with at Nationals in six weeks. We've got the Rust-Belters from Pittsburgh, the Thunder Show-cats from Gainesville and finally, from Fort Wayne, Throat Explosion!"
"No!" Tina yelled as we looked at her confused, I didn't know who Throat Explosion were but they didn't sound that threatening.
Jake obviously felt the same way as he furrowed his eyebrows. "Throat Explosion, that's a joke, right?"
"Anything but, they're the new supergroup the Show Choir Underground's been buzzing about." Blaine explained, being the only person who read the Show Choir blogs. "They don't even go to class, they just perform, every minute of every day. They're like mini Lady Gaga's."
"We're so screwed. They're not like Vocal Adrenaline, who were unfeeling Borg robots. They're total outsiders and misfits which used to be our niche. We can't compete with Throat Explosion anymore at that level because we lost our biggest Gaga when Kurt graduated last year." Tina complained as she pointed to all of us. "Look around, we're a room full of like, Katy Perry's now."
I nudged Kitty who was leaning on the piano next to me because we both knew that we were not Katy Perry's, we were the top best two Cheerio's that McKinley had ever seen and we owned each pep rally with our talent. We were Gaga's and we were proud of it. I had to agree with Tina though, that a lot of the members of the Glee Club acted like Katy Perry's, but there wasn't anything wrong with that, we needed diversity otherwise the group dynamic wouldn't work.
"Oh, you best check your spectrum Queen T because orange is the new black and Unique is the new Gaga."
"Well, not Marley, she's a Katy Perry." Tina replied, listing the members. "So is Sam and Blaine."
"I'm a Katy Perry and I'm proud of it."
"The truth is Tina, we're a potent mix of Katy Perry's and Lady Gaga's in here. But it's not a liability, it's how we're going to beat Throat Explosion. Some of us in here are edgy."
"Edgy?" Artie frowned, not liking my Dad's wording. "You just made that up."
"Some of us are more wholesome, innocent, romantic types. Who in here would describe themselves as a Gaga?"
I raised my hand and so did Kitty, then I checked the rest of the room to see that Tina, Unique and Jake had also raised their hands. I agreed that out of everyone in the Glee Club, we were definitely the Gaga's because we were louder about our talents and knew exactly what we wanted, not afraid of how we had to act to get it done. A year ago, I may have considered myself a Katy, but now that I was gaining my confidence, I was proud to stand among the most confident members of the Glee Club. I was a Gaga, and I was proud of it.
