Cheerio's rehearsals were going better than ever now that we had held auditions and found a whole new batch of girls that could take the places of the girls who graduated. Kitty was annoying and complained about everything I asked her to do because she thought that she knew more than I did. Luckily, the girls that knew me, stuck up for me and explained that I had led them to a National Championship last year; so, I knew what I was doing.
However, through the entire hour of practise, something felt different and I soon realised that it was because Brittany was missing. I asked one of the girls that I had become friendly with and she told me that Brittany had been kicked off the squad because her grades weren't up to scratch. This made sense as she hadn't been able to graduate but I never thought that Sue would kick her off the squad.
"Schuester, I need to talk to you."
Everyone else began leaving the gym as I grabbed my training bag and made my way towards Coach Sylvester, who had just finished talking to Kitty. I waited for her to walk away, staring at me with a worrying smirk on her face before I was ushered forward to talk to our coach.
"Is everything okay, Coach?" I asked, fiddling with my fingers so I wouldn't seem as nervous as I actually was.
"I'm sure you've noticed I've been making some changes to our squad. And I'm not finished, there's one last change that has been playing on my mind."
I nodded, worried about what she was going to say next.
"I made you Captain because I saw potential in you to lead my girls to victory, which you did and I'm proud of everything you've achieved but there's an issue with your confidence. I thought that once the Seniors had left, you would step up to the challenge and prove to everyone that you can lead the squad without them but that's not the case. Your confidence levels are getting worse and I need a Captain who can lead the team, not stand behind it and let others shine."
"I can get better. I swear, I'll work harder-"
"I know you will but unless I see an improvement then I'll have no choice but to give the position to someone more suited to the role. Kitty seems like a confident girl, she could lead the girls and listen to advice by her deputy, if that's something you'd be interested in?"
"Being her deputy?" I repeated, frowning at the thought. "Please, coach, give me another chance and I'll prove how much I've changed. I can be confident, I can lead the girls, I can do this."
Coach Sylvester sighed at me. "One more chance, only because I trust you. Perform a routine at the end of the week and prove to me that you have the star quality I need to be Head Cheerio. If you fall short then I'll have no choice but to give the position to Kitty, understood?"
I agreed. I knew that this was my last chance to stay as Captain and stay doing something I loved. If I messed this up then I knew that my last year of high school would be wasted. Cheerleading is something I love to do and I don't just want the position to be popular, that's the last thing on my mind. If Kitty got the role then I would have to quit because I wouldn't be able to work under her leadership, she's too self-absorbed to be Captain, which was why I needed to prove to everyone that I could be confident.
