"Don't scream," the voice whispered. I threw my arms back, knocking the intruder in the face. I jumped up to see that Zach already had the other intruder in a headlock.
"Bloody hell!" I heard my intruder shout. I gasped a sigh of relief. Zach sighed and loosened his grip on the other.
"Grant? Bex?" He asked. "What the hell are you doing? It's 4 in the morning." We turned on a lamp. Grant and Bex looked at each other.
"Just running an errand," Bex replied.
"How did you get passed our security measures?" Zach questioned. Bex only laughed and held up a key. "Know anything about that, Cameron?" I laughed a nervous laugh.
"Sorry we're here so late, we've just got to get out," Grant said running his hands through his hair. That's when I heard the sound of crying babies. I ran out of our room to see the twins crying in their carriers.
"Adalind and Amelia!" I shouted. I ran and picked up the twins, rocking them slowly. Bex and Grant smiled at me. Zach came over and took 1 of the babies out of my arms. He smiled down at the small bundle.
"Please babysit for us!" Bex rushed. Zach and I looked up. Zach looked like a deer in headlights. "Only for a few hours. We won't be gone long. We just want to be alone for 5 minutes, this will be great practice!"
"Um I don't think this will go well," Zach stammered.
"Please, buddy," Grant begged. He put a hand on Zach's shoulder. "We haven't been alone in 4 months! We never sleep. We're always busy with babies. The British bombshell and I need a night out."
"Well," I stuttered. "It would be good practice." Zach shot me a glare. I shrugged it off.
"Great!" Bex exclaimed. "Here's there diaper bag. I already put their bottles in the fridge. They've got enough milk to last them a couple of days. If they want to play they've got toys in the diaper bag. We'll be back soon!"
"Exactly what are you going to do?" Zach asked with a cocked eyebrow. The Newman's were already half way out the door. Grant peeked his head back in 1 more time and winked.
"We're gonna go make baby number 3," he said with a laugh. I cringed. Zach rolled his eyes.
The babies began crying again, so we each grabbed a couple of the bottles that Bex left in the fridge. I took Amelia to our nursery. I showed her the little progress that we had made on the room. We had painted the walls a gray color. We were going to be surprised with the gender. A black crib was in the room. Zach had just put up floating black shelves. I showed Amelia the white chair and the black foot rest. I set her on the furry white rug.
"This is my babies room," I whispered to Amelia. "I know that you 2 will be good friends." Amelia rolled around on the rug for a while. Eventually, I decided to take her to go find Zach and Adalind.
I found Zach sitting on our couch in the living room. He was gently rocking an asleep Adalind. He was watching her with the eyes I had seen him look at me with a couple times. The look that if anyone wanted to touch Adalind, they would have to go through him first. I didn't want to interrupt the moment, or his intense gaze. I couldn't help myself.
"Looks like someone made a friend," I smiled. He finally tore his gaze from Adalind and looked at me. He smiled at the sight of me with a baby in my arms.
"This one loves her uncle Zach, don't you sweetheart?" He said turning back to the baby.
"You look like you'd jump in front of a bullet for her," I examined. He nodded his head.
"I would. She's my best friends little girl. Her innocence is worth more than me," he stated. I could have told him he was wrong. I could have said anything, but instead I decided to sit next to him. I rested my head on his shoulder. He kissed the top of my head.
"Four more months," I whispered. He nodded. I didn't remember falling asleep in that position, but at one point, I did. I woke up feeling 2 hands pressed on my shoulder.
"Wake up sleepyhead," Bex said. I looked next to me. Zach was gone.
"Where's Zach?" I asked her. "What time is it?"
"Sorry, Cammie," Grant chimed in. "Zach got called in a few minutes ago. It's noon." I gasped.
"Noon!" I exclaimed. "I haven't slept that long in years." Bex smiled. Then she gave me a sad look.
"I'm sorry that Zach had to leave. He said he didn't want to wake you since you hadn't slept for a while. He said it wouldn't take long, maybe a couple of days. He told us to tell you that he loves you and he's sorry," she informed. I nodded.
"Oh, okay," I replied. Her and Grant shared a look. I knew Zach had told them about my nightmares.
"Need me to stay with you?" Bex asked. I shook my head.
"No, you have to watch your girls," I answered.
"Ah come on, Cammie. I can handle the twins. It'll be good for Bex to stay with you. At least until Zach gets back," Grant replied. That's when I knew that Zach had put them up to this.
"Whatever Zach told you, forget it. I'm fine on my own. We're all busy with our lives. I'm fine," I said again. Bex shot Grant an I told you so look.
"Fine," she finally said. "I know you're too stubborn to give in. Zach is right though, you shouldn't be alone. At least go see Townsend and Abby. Now say bye bye to Aunt Cammie girls." The twins wiggled in Grant's arms. I told my friends goodbye and sat back down on the couch. I was lonely. Bex was right. I decided to go see my Aunt Abby.
* * *
"Abby!" I shouted as I burst through the door. I didn't get an answer. I turned the hallway and started toward her room. "Abby?"
"Edward," I heard Ed say behind me. I walked to the kitchen and saw him eating Chinese food at the kitchen counter. He lifted a hand and gave me a little wave.
"Oh, hey," I said. I tried to hide my disappointment. I slid into the seat next to him. He kept his eyes glued forward. He ate using chopsticks. I sighed. He chuckled. I looked at him.
"You've got separation issues, don't you?" He asked with a laugh. I rolled my eyes.
"Ha ha, very funny. Where's Abby?" I asked looking around. He nodded to the note on the refrigerator. Abby took the twins to the zoo. "Why didn't you go with them?"
"No one woke me up," he grumbled. He shoved an egg roll in his mouth.
"Join the club," I mumbled. He held out an egg roll towards me, I took it. "Where's Zach?" I took a bite.
"Cameron," he warned. I sighed, I knew it was classified. I finished my egg roll.
"This is the worst," I grumbled. He looked at me. "I'm so bored that I'm hanging out with you. I've officially hit rock bottom." He grinned at me.
"And here I thought you were proactive," he said. He shrugged as if to say he was wrong.
"What do you expect me to do?" I snapped. He held his hands up in surrender.
"Take your mind off of things," he said with a shrug. "Workout." I rolled my eyes at him.
"Great idea," I said sarcastically. He put his food town. He turned his chair to face me.
"You're pregnant, not crippled," he snapped back. I raised my eyebrows.
"Help me," I stated. It wasn't a question. He cocked an eyebrow. "Workout with me. Make up my workouts and train me." He scoffed. I looked him in the eye, searching. His eyelids raised.
"You're serious?" He asked. I nodded. He began to laugh. "Oh, you're in for a treat." I gulped and wondered what I had gotten myself into.
