Annalise Goode was going over the plan with her roommates. Chase's message was clear. He needed out of Blackthorne. He needed their help.
"Can't we just call your parents?" Caroline whined. "They could get us in and out easily!"
"No, Care," Anna began. "They have their own missions to go on. If Chase wanted them to break him out then he would have sent this letter to them." The girls groaned.
"Okay, everyone knows the plan. Adalind and Amelia will drive. Diana, you'll come with me into Blackthorne to break Chase out. Caroline, you'll hack the fire walls and get us in. Twins, you'll tackle security," Anna said. "What?" She looked at Adalind and Amelia. They shared a very guilty look.
"You know we love you, right?" Amelia asked. "And we love Chase. We want to help. It's just... we're seniors." Anna's mouth dropped open. The twins weren't coming. Their whole plan was ruined.
"We'll cover for you. We wish you the best of luck," Amelia rushed to say. Anna nodded. She tried not to let them see how hurt she was.
"We can't go," Anna whispered. Everyone looked at her. "We don't have a driver. We're all too young." Diana snorted. The group turned to her.
"Oh please, my mom taught me to drive in 6th grade. She planned it for times like these. I can drive. I'm a little rusty, though. It might be really bad, but it's a plan," Diana said. Anna nodded. The girls walked to the very front of the school. It was 3 in the morning. This was their one chance to leave. They knew it wouldn't end well. It was extremely risky, especially with Diana as the driver.
"Where's the car?" Anna asked Amelia. Amelia pointed to an old car that looked like it would hardly run.
"Sorry," Adalind said. "This was the best we could do." Anna nodded. If they wanted to leave they had to go. Anna craned her neck as 2 headlights approached them.
"Who is that?" Caroline asked as she held her computer close to her.
"I have no idea," Amelia said. Anna started to panic. They were so busted.
The car got closer and Anna realized that it was a white, 2010 Ford Escape. She held her breath as the car stopped in front of them. Anna cocked her head as the doors flew up. "Get in," a familiar voice said. Anna's mouth dropped.
"Bree?" The girls exclaimed. They had made a specific point not to tell her. Bree winked.
"Did you really think you were going to do this without me?" She asked. Caroline clapped. Diana looked relieved. Anna knew why. Bree was almost 17, she could actually drive. The twins grinned at Bree.
"No, you can't come," Anna said with a shake of her head. The group all turned to her and shot glares. Anna sighed. "Chase would not want her to come. She can't. He wouldn't want her to take that risk or... see the school." The girls realized what Anna meant. Blackthorne was an assassin school. Chase would never want Bree to know the truth.
"I don't care what he wants," Bree snapped. "He needs help. I'm coming." Anna shook her head. Her brother would kill her.
"Ann, we don't have a choice. My driving isn't good. I've hardly ever been on the highway. And if I were to get pulled over it would be game over. Bree has to come," Diana sighed.
"No! Chase would not want her to come. If he knew that she was coming he would tell us to stop the whole trip!" Anna exclaimed.
"You don't get it!" Bree shouted. Everyone turned to her in shock. Bree never yelled at them or looked so angry. "I need to see him. I haven't been able to function since he left. I can't think, sleep, or hardly eat. I need him. Ever since I've met him something changed. I can't live without him." Anna sighed.
"I used to feel that way about Cason," she said quietly. Bree's face and tone softened.
"Anna please," Bree begged. "I need to see him. I.. I think I love him." Anna jerked her head up. She grinned at Bree.
"Then let's go."
* * *
Anna learned a lot of things on that road trip. She made a list.
1- Bree's grandfather had bought her the Ford Escape for her 16th birthday.
2- It was a very comfortable and cute car. It really suited Bree.
3- Bree had planted a bug in their room after she got the letter from Chase to see when they were leaving (genius!).
4- Caroline ate all of their candy snacks within the first 2 hours.
5- She was very lucky to be riding shot gun (Caroline was leaning on Diana to sleep in the back).
6- Bree never slept. She never even complained about driving for hours.
7- Bree was amazing (she got pulled over for speeding and honeypotted the officer into letting her off the hook!).Anna and Bree sat in silence. Caroline and Diana were asleep in the back. Anna had been to Blackthorne multiple times to drop Chase off, so she navigated. Bree didn't look tired. She really should have. Bree had been driving for hours without pause. She kept her eyes glued onto the road. She made every turn that was used for losing a tail. The sun was rising even more.
"Are you okay?" Anna asked. Bree let her eyes drift to Anna for a second.
"I'm fine, angel," Bree said with a smile. Anna was trained to notice things. That was why she noticed the nervous look in Bree's eyes.
"Are you tired?" Anna pressed on. Bree waved her hand, brushing it away.
"No, I've been having trouble sleeping lately. Staying awake is what I'm good at. Besides," Bree's voice dropped to a whisper. "I don't want to sleep. Then I might dream." Bree was having nightmares? Anna was surprised. She didn't say anything, she didn't think Bree wanted to talk about it.
"Do you want to get out and stretch? You've been driving for 8 hours straight," Anna said. Bree shook her head.
"We took a break an hour ago. We need to keep going," she said firmly.
"Bree, it's really okay. We can sleep somewhere. The back seats fold down, right? We can wait," Anna said. Bree shook her head.
"I have to get to him," Bree stated. Anna gave up. It seemed like nothing was going to keep Bree from getting to Chase as soon as possible.
Anna was quiet for the rest of the drive. Diana and Caroline had woken up and were anxiously waiting. Anna knew that they were close.
"Hey, do you really expect us to go through the front gates?" Bree asked. "I don't think that's going to work." Anna considered it. Bree had a point.
"I don't know any other ways in," Anna admitted. Diana huffed. The girls all knew that they were screwed.
"Well now what do we do?" Caroline asked. "Do we know anyone that would know how to get in?"
"My dad would know," Anna whispered. "Park." Bree pulled the car as close to the gates as she could and parked in the trees. She tossed the keys to Caroline who was on her lap top in the front seat.
"If we need to leave quick shift into drive and slam on the gas petal," Bree instructed. Caroline gulped and nodded.
"Alright, the plan is simple," Anna began. "Caroline will get us in and out. Bree and Diana, you help me find Chase and take out any guards on the way."
Diana cracked her knuckles and grinned. "Let's do this."
